Fish: You should try it sometime in the great white north! My favorite rides,(1) nomad (2) skidoo (3) ATV. One needs something to ride all year.

That certainly used to be me in the winters. At one time I was second place in the provincial water crossing events here.

Yup, I have been guilty of most of the above also.
Now I just ride the trails.

Larry if you had a sled,
here's what you could do when the fish aren't biting.

Its not so bad once you get the nerve up to try it, I used to practice in the summer when the water was warm. I sank mine once in Georgian bay in the middle of Febuary, the water sure wakes you up in a hurry then.

Norm I don't know about crossing the water but I can see myself doing some of that next winter. I'm planning a move up north to the 108 Ranch,...{I bought a place but might just use it for recreational for a yr. or two unless I retire before hand},....and a couple of snowmobiles are in my future. I'll probably stick to the trails though. At least when my wife is with me.

The waves are what gets you in trouble, I used to be able to do figure 8's on the lake and wouldn't sink until the sled started bouncing pretty goo on the waves.

How did you retrieve the sled and how deep was the water?

Speed is everything, blow a drive belt or lose power and you're sunk, pardon the pun.
The few times I've done it (certainly not on the same scale as the video) I never sunk one, but have helped get a few out. Luckily all were not too far from shore and not that deep. The smoothest recovery was a Friend who sunk not far from my cottage. The ice was solid right up to the edge of the open water and that is more or less where he lost it. We could see it in about ten feet of water and keep tossing a grappling hook till we caught onto it. About 5 of us were able to haul it up and back to the edge of the ice. The real issue was getting the skis over top of the ice. While the rest stayed back from the edge and pulled on the rope one guy went forward and pried the skis up one at a time with a board. Total time for that one was about 20 minutes.
