New to me. First time rider
Hi, I am new to riding and just bought a 05 Nomad. I am having big issues with taking off from a stop. Both killing it and once the throttle lock didn't let the grip go back. Almost but it into a wall! I love the bike on the open road. Put 150 miles on it in two rides.[ATTACH]

Welcome aboard! I'd remove or fix the throttle lock before you do have a mishap.

You chose a fairly heavy bike to "learn" on but just be cautious. As mentioned, fix the throttle lock before it bites you in the azz and check out a MSF beginners course.

Have already taken it off. The group of guys I am riding with take great care of me. I am a big dude ( 6' 1", 235lbs) so the heavy ain't that bad. If I can get the taking off from dead stop down i will never want to drive a car again. Anyone know of a place to buy accessories for this beauty?

Take the throttle lock off. If you decide you want it later then put it back on.
I suggest you go to a school parking lot on the weekend and practice starting from a stop. That way you will have plenty of time to work on it with no one behind you wanting to go. No pressure. Just get the feel of it and you'll be fine. You can also practice some low speed turns like you'll be making getting in and out of places. Stay off the front brake when you are turning at a slow speed.

interesting concern....it really doesnt require much throttle to launch one of these from a dead stop....my suggestion is how i teach people new to a stick....practice clutch modulation and get to a pooint where you can take off without any throttle at all....then add throttle as necessary to take off at the speed you want....the school parking lot is a good idea if they arent all gated off on the weekends and at night....otherwise look for an empty plaza....
most of the time when someone is having a hard time taking off they are concentrating way too hard at it....overthinking and trying to do too many things at once....when you realize how easy the clutch is to modulate and then start regulating throttle itll be easy as cake.... i like the pipe insulation idea....when you stall a big bike it can be unforgiving if youre not ready for it.... good luck.... |

Welcome, and those are some great tips. The one I had my sons do, is to take off using
the clutch only. They were riding in no time at all.

In my best Master Po voice....Balance, young grasshopper. Find the balance between your throttle and clutch. Then, young grasshopper, go immediately to a MSF beginners course. There is no shame in knowledge. End of Master Po voice.
The MSF course taught my wife and my son how to ride safe. There were students of all ages, shapes, and sizes. I go to the MSF advanced riders course every couple of years....and I've been riding for over 35 years. Everyone should do it.

Welcome aboard from Georgia, there are some really great tips listed, the only thing I can add is to play with the dial on the clutch lever, You can adjust the throw of the lever changing the friction zone a little. It does take some getting used to, on a hydraulic clutch.
