‘03 Nomad 1500 not starting

Bought a used bike a while back and the thing ended up breaking down on me right after i bought it. To this point I’ve replaced the clutch spring and battery. Now, when I try to start the bike, I get one solid, loud click. THen nothing. All electronics and lights come on, but the bike will not turn over. I replaced the starter relay yesterday without success. Any ideas?

Is the battery fully charged, and do you have clean connections? Check some of the plugs in the wiring harness to see that they have no corrosion.

A few years back, mine did as your describing, and my problem turned out to be corroded contacts in the switch you press with your thumb to start the bike. I disassembled the housing and cleaned the contacts with some crocus cloth (very, very fine sand paper), applied a little dielectric grease, and reassembled.

What They Said! Be sure all your electrical system grounds are good and clean, battery contacts are tight and clean.
Check your voltage at your battery while your bike is idling (high idle) reving slightly.....you should have at least 13 to 13.5 volts at the battery just above your high idle rpm....
Also, when your bike is off, you should be able to connect a 12 volt test tight between your + lead on your and the battery itself. This will tell you if you have a drain on your battery while your key is off....

What happened when you say 'broke down'. Also, when you put the clutch spring in did you use anything to wedge in the gear to hold the clutch pack from turning while tightening the nut?

Sorry for the late reply. Yeah, we wedged something in there. Honestly, I don't remember what we used but I do remember taking it out.

As far as it turning over after repairing the clutch, no, it didn't. But in all fairness, when I went back to try the battery was completely dead and unsalvageable. So, I don't actually have anything to compare it to. Should I disassemble the clutch assembly again and make sure I didn't screw up something in the gear assembly?

When I say broke down, the clutch slipped on me while I was riding it home (the day I bought it, actually). After that I couldn't get it to go above 1st gear. When I pulled the clutch spring the teeth were worn almost to nothing.

Take the clutch cover off and with the bike in neutral try turning it over with a breaker bar and socket on the crank bolt 92001 in the attached illustration.

If it turns over easily (take plugs out) the problem is in the starter, if not, then go back and look at your work.

If it doesn't turn easily, don't force it and break the bolt.

Let us know how it goes.

Soooo yeah. My dumbass partner and myself left a penny in the clutch.

However, now that we removed it, it still won’t start. When I press the ignition, I can hear what I assume is the starter motor spinning freely but nothing happens. I’m assuming this means it isn’t engaging the flywheel.

However, I’m not the most mechanically inclined so I could be way off on that.

Did you put the washer back on the starter clutch ‘sprag’?

The one that always falls off when you take the cover off.

If the starter is spinning and not engaging, then something is amiss. While working on the bike, did ya'll remove anything or mess with anything at the front of the clutch cover? Unbolt the starter?
I'd pull the cover back off and check the starter drive....might have left piece of a rag behind, etc.
Check for something binding up the gear drive up front.
Check it with a breaker bar on the clutch drive bolt as MAS told you....something isn't right.

I’ll post a picture of what is essentially happening. Again, I’m no mechanic

In the attached photo, gear indicated with the yellow arrow spins freely without engaging the shaft indicated in red, which is where the washer goes. The same thing happens even with the washer and cover back on. In turn, nothing else is engaged.

Any ideas? At this point I’m running out of ideas other than bringing it to a shop, which will cost more than I can afford at the moment.

Hey, do us a favor, post a bigger pic, i can't see diddly ! That way, MAS, myself and some of our resident wrenches can get a good look at whats going on. Take several front back, top....at the starter gear.... Get that camera up close and personal!
