2002 Carbed 1500 Nomad HELP!
Kawasaki flip flopped between carbs and FI between 2000 & 2002 . Although it seems very few carbed bikes were made after 2000

2002 Carbed 1500 Nomad HELP!
Ok... here is where You all get to chuckle and shake your heads... Admittedly I am IGNORANT concerning mechanics. Flip side to that is I am REALLY grateful for the info that you share with me. With that being said... Because the bike had a "choke" I assumed it was carbed. It is NOT a choke. According the the Klymers book it is an idle adjuster. My bike is fuel injected. (que the laughing and shaking of your heads...)
So.. 2002 Nomad. Fuel injected. Vance & Hines pipes. NO FUEL COMMANDER. K&N air filter. Plugs that were in it were not fouled, but they were the wrong plugs according to the book. So replaced the plugs with hotter plugs. Cleaned the air filter. Checked the seals. Poured 1/2 bottle of alcohol in tank, warmed it up and ran it through emissions again. Failed again by one full point. First failure was 2 points off and second failure was 1 point off. I was told that there is "too much air getting through and that air is turning into carbon monoxide." I was told that since the pipes were changed that "I HAVE to get a fuel commander or it will NEVER pass" I was told "I have a leak" somewhere. I was told "Find a set of stock pipes, put them on and then you will pass emissions" I have NO IDEA of what to do. |

2002 Carbed 1500 Nomad HELP!
That knob is a high idle adjustment when its cold out.
Id run at least a half can of Seafoam along with a tank of high test fuel and go for a good long ride, at least a 100 miles. This should clean out the motor good after a couple hours. Id also get some spray carb cleaner and an old toothbrush and give the throttle body a good scrubbing, especially where the butterflies close on the intake body. Carbon forms there and causes you to have a poor idle. If this hasn't been done you will probably find that when you start the bike it will be idling very high and will need to be turned down. There is a how to in our tech boards on this process. Too much air will never create carbon monoxide, too much fuel will. Thats why you need to make sure the throttle body is spotless. What kind of leak do you have? exhaust, fuel anti freeze etc. I don't see why it shouldn't pass with the V&H pipes but a stock set has the goats belly and this should create a little more heat at the tailpipe which may help burn off some of the fuel thats being blown out. When they test the emissions do they do it at a certain rpm or at an idle. A fast idle has a better chance of passing than a slow one. Here in Ontario they test cars at 2500rpm, not at an idle. Id clean everything as I mentioned, try the Seafoam treatment, a good grade of gas and try again, before I resorted to switching pipes or adding a fuel processor. Hope this helps.

2002 Carbed 1500 Nomad HELP!
Here they do an idle test then have you rev Up to 2500rpm's for 30 seconds. As my bike does not have a tach, I have to guestimate what is 2500. I am going to clean the throttle body as You said in the morning and then am pouring in some heet into the gas tank - gonna go for about a 40 mile ride and then try again.
THANK YOU ALL for the advice! |
