Scraping the floorboards, do you?

At the end of my second year with the C50, I could do it on demand, but not with the Nomad yet. I try to practice tight low-speed turns a lot, but I don't know that I'll ever get the guts (or confidence) to lean the Nomad that far over.

I think sometimes that I really prefer the old cable clutch on the C50 to that of the Nomad. I'll probably get used to it in time.

I've scraped a couple of times, but not intentionally. I've never done it while riding twisties or anything, once or twice making a tight turn into a parking lot or side street.

Scraping the floorboards, do you?

On other bikes I've had I've scraped my pegs on many occasions (st1100 comes to mind), but with the Nomad only a couple of times. Done in turns at intersections only. (So far). Don't like it........

When a road has a crown in the center and slopes off toward the shoulder of the road when making a left hand turn seems to be when I've scraped most.

I've scraped both boards several times but never intentionally. Actually, you don't have to be going very fast to do it. I for sure wouldn't want to be dragging boards at 50 or 60 mph.

I had a somewhat longer post about this in the garage if you're interested:

I scrape mine just about every time I ride. But I do it at very slow speeds when I don't have to worry about the tires losing grip. Anyone can do it with the force of speed. Plus, the higher the speed, the greater the risk.

I have scraped my left floorboard several time. Mainly while making a left turn, "not on twisties".

Scraping the floorboards, do you?

I scrape left and right floorboards regularly love to see how far it can go over in a corner. I have a few good scratches on the pipes as well and it has never felt like letting go my dealer is always amazed when I take it in to get new tyres fitted how a cruiser can destroy rear tyres like a sports bike.

I've only scraped a few times and that's enough for this guy. Like Wolfman, I'm fairly conservative in the corners,... especially in blind corners where I'm unsure of what MIGHT be coming around it.
I rode the #36 Hwy. in north California this past summer and had a lot of fun pushing myself while taking some of those corners with higher speeds than what's posted, with a buddy behind me, that loves to scrape his boards. But as a rule I'd prefer not to scrape.

Just to clear up some common misconceptions. I doubt that you will ever lose traction from being leaned over too far.

It is possible, but only at times when it is possible at normal everyday speeds too, such as particularly polished surfaces, oil on the road, ice, wet leaves, etc.

I've ridden since I was 14, and have 80,000 miles just on a Nomad. I have never even one time lost traction with front or rear tire from leaning over too far on pavement.

I've lost traction on gravel/dirt roads, I've leaned too far in parking lot practice and levered the rear tire off the ground, but never even once on a fast corner, EVER. I routinely take a corner with a 40mph warning sign at 80mph, leaned over dragging the boards, never losing traction.

I just wanted to clear up unfounded fears of losing traction from leaning over too far. If you are going to ride in a prudent manner, do it so that you can stop within your sight lines, do it so that you feel more comfortable etc. But there is no need to do it because you would have lost traction otherwise.

Scraping the floorboards, do you?

Scraped a couple of times by accident. One was making a 90 degree left turn onto a highway that was banking hard to the right because of a curve. I scraped the left board so hard that I felt the rear tire come off the pave a little. Scared the heck out of my wife so much that she slapped me on the shoulder. Second time was in parking lot practice. I knew that one was coming though. I don't ever scrape purposely.

Scraping the floorboards, do you?

I have scraped several times.I have only been riding cruisers for about a year and 1/2.prior to that was 30+ years on sport bikes so I forget you can't lean into the curves as much on my Nomad.I try not to but sometimes I forget how low it sits.

Scraping the floorboards, do you?

I have rode motorcycles for about 45 years. Motorcycle cop/police instructor for years, and won several plaques in police competition. That might not mean a thing to anyone, and thats ok.

But I will ride based upon my experience and opinion, that motorcycles can lose traction when leaned too far.

I hope whenever you see me ride, or ride with me, that I am practicing safe and prudent riding techniques.

Scraping the floorboards, do you?

I set my "training-wheels" to a height that won't allow me to scrape my boards!

Scraping the floorboards, do you?

I did regularly on my Classic, but less on the Nomad. Lately I've learned to slow down and rarely scrape (Thanks Anita). It is best to learn about this because when it first happens and you're not ready for how it sounds and especially how it reverberates through your foot and up your leg it can cause you to straighten up and leave your lane. Very unnerving...
