Is 30k too soon for extenders?
It will sound like a bicycle chain rubbing on metal, most likely noticeable at idle or when you let off the throttle depending on how stretched it is. A quick check to see if they are rubbing is to remove the spark plug guide tube (it unscrews from the cylinder) and check to see if the chain is wearing a groove through the metal tube. The more accurate way is to check the tensioner measurement as described on Gadgets sight.

Is 30k too soon for extenders?
Joe is an awesome dude. Very supportive of Nomad owners. His risers and extenders are great and his turnaround time very fast.
Joe has been a big help to me in the past. In regards to the extenders themselves, I have heard of some needing them at 25 K miles and some with 50 K not needing them. Best bet is for someone who feels they may be getting some noise from them to do a check ( Gadget has the procedure on his site ). It's fairly painless and quick and could save you some major dollars. You do not want too much slack in those chains resulting in them tearing up your engine. :) Good luck on the replacement. Hope it all goes smoothly for you. Chris |

They slowly get noisy, then the adjuster clicks up tighter & they quiet down suddenly. For me it happened about every 5000 miles or so. You've never noticed this? |

Is 30k too soon for extenders?
Believe it or not...
You know it doesn't rain until you've washed your bike, right? Yesterday I ordered the extenders and on the way to work this AM both my chain adjusters kicked in a notch within 5 miles of each other. And this is after thinking for 3 months now that they were bottomed out and my chains were gonna start slappin' holes in the case any day now. Dang! It sounded so much better this AM. |

Is 30k too soon for extenders?
I honestly have not noticed any changes in either bike. Both have stock exhausts, and I usually let them warm up for a minute or so while I get my helmet and gloves on. I don't even recall anyone in the area ever having problems with the chains. Guess I'd better get to checking the tensioners. Thanks for the info.

Is 30k too soon for extenders?
Mine were fully extended at 24,000 miles and replaced them. I checked them out of curiosity. With all the noise the engine puts out, I don't think replacing them made it any quieter.

You can't really hear them "kick in". WHen you really notice it is when you come to a stop, and the bike seems quieter. Then lean down & listen. They never both kick in at the same time and one chain will sound quieter than the other. Eventually the other one will kick in too, and when you stop you can hear that both chains sound quieter.
But it's not super obvious. It's something you'll need to listen for to hear. |

I got the extenders form joe last week. He was really quicck about shipping them too. I haven't put them in yet, but I probably will before going on any long rides.
