Hard Bags loose

I just bought a used 2006 1600, I previously owned an 2004 1500. I notice on the 1600 that both saddlebags appear loose. I haven't climbed under them yet but it's as if there isn't a bottom mount or if there is it's not connected, or is this just the way the 1600 hard bags sit?

TIA,
Jim

mine are not very tight, I put some tape around the donuts under the bags.

There's two bolts inside each saddlebag, I seem to recall you need a 10mm wrench. Lift the bags off and look under them. There are two nubs on the bottom of each bag that slip into corresponding sockets in the bag lower mounts. There is a gasket that fits between the two. Make sure those gaskets are not missing There may be a small amount of movement even in a properly mounted bag.

The gaskets on the bottom wear out, electrical tape works very well as mentioned above. The gaskets also have a tendency to go missing from time to time if you take your bags off and don't pay attention when you put them back on. Or so I have been told. :)

I bought my Nomad with a couple of the rubber grommets missing from the bottom mounts. The bags rattled badly, and were starting to wear.

OEM grommets are ridiculously priced (and fall out) so I just went looking on EBay for some replacements.

If you find you need new gaskets or even with the old one use a little silicone under them when you install them and they will not come out unless you work at getting them out. The key here is you just need a couple of dabs or getting them out in the future will be difficult.

I engineered some "Mounting-Gaskets" from flexable plastic strip...dont know what it was designed for but had a groove in it that just fits the mount opening..and it was flexable enough to bend around and fit the mounting-feet, on the bags..(no slack no more !)

I knew the grommet gaskets could fall out so I used black 3-M weather stripping glue on mine. You glue these to the steel saddle bag support and put the gaskets back on and never need to remove or suffer loss again. Probably yours are missing.

I managed to lose one of the grommets off Old Blue. I went to Lowes and got some items to fab something $ 12.00 . The more I looked at what I could find the less I liked it. I went on Ron Ayers ( they are only 20 miles away ) and found the PN 92160B. Just to save a trip I googled the PN and found them via Partzilla for a buck each so four was less than $10 with shipping. Will update as to quality and shipping time once they arrive.

That's what I am using....Mansfield Model # 630-4837. You can buy them in Home Depot for around I think $3 or $4.

Bearslayer, those grommets are for side covers. We're talking saddlebags!
