Greetings from a "newbie"

Okay, I probably should have better titled it a "wannabe". Haven't ridden much in a long while, but after more research than I care to detail, I am firmly in the market for a 2000-2007 1500FI Classic/Nomad.
Homebase will be Central Florida, but plan to use the bike to visit all the places that I missed in earlier years and revisit the ones I really enjoyed.
I hope that I can ask for some patience, at least in the beginning, because I am hoping to tap into the experience and insight that I am sure is plentiful amongst the membership here.
Of course the first thing is to acquire a ride, and I am open to suggestions about which years in the timeframe above to concentrate on, or better yet any to avoid. What things should I be aware of or questions to ask of potential sellers when I look at the bike. I know this is a broad spectrum, but I figure if I don't ask, I'll probably never know. The only thing I am reasonably sure of is that I want a fuel injected bike. The "plan" also is to do a fair amount of distance riding, once I get a few miles under the seat, so outfitting is important. I will have a "backseater" with me as well during the excursions.
Thanks to all in advance and I promise to give back as I gain some relevant knowledge.

Best,
Rick

Why only a 1500? You ought to consider a 1600.

Yeah, you need to get a 1600.
Just so happens I have a 2008 1600 Nomad for you.

Hello and Welcome.

Personally I would be looking for the newest 1600 (2008 was the last year) I could find.

Thanks to all of you for the "greetings" and the much appreciated advice. To be honest, the reason I was focusing on the earlier models was the purchase price. I agree that a newer (1600) series maybe an better long term idea. I really want to make sure that I am going to enjoy this as much as I anticipate I will. I suspect that if it turns out different, the "cost" won't actually be too much different and if I buy a newer machine I will have a better long term investment.
If this conversation is better suited for another part of the forum, let me know and I happy to move it.
To be honest, this is exactly the type of info I was hoping to generate, I know that everyone has their own opinions and I welcome those thoughts. I would appreciate a line or two why you feel one is a better option than another and what things I should be looking for during the search. As an example, where does mileage become a concern? Does a bike with some cosmetic damage mean "danger zone" automatically. Is there a reliable way to determine if a bike has been in an accident vs just falling off the stand? It's not easy being a newbie.....LOL
Thanks again!
