Nomad to Mexico

I have a potential buyer for my Nomad who lives in Mexico. What has to be done to sell a bike and move it out of the country?

First make sure you aren't getting scammed.

Let the buyer pick it up and worry about getting it to Mexico.

He did understand that the price was in dollars and not pesos.

Id make sure the money is cleared in your account before you ship the bike. It would be best for the buyer to pay you in person and take the bike by his own method.

To bring your bike into Mexico beyond the border region about 20 miles you have to post a bond on it which they return upon recrossing the border with your vehicle. This is to prevent the sale of American vehicles in Mexico which hurts Mexican auto sales. If you do sell it in Mexico there is a lot of red tape involved.

Your American insurance is invalid once you pass the border region and theft insurance for motorcycles was never available in my day and still isn't to my knowledge. And even if it was, it would probably be a worthless piece of paper.
Mororcycles are very high on the theft list of vehicles in Mexico.

If he is a serious buyer let him meet you on the American side of the border and demand cash in US dollars.

When a bike is being shipped out of the country it is the buyer's responsilbility to satisfy taxes, import fees, customs requirements and any other fees. All you have to do is sign the title and count the cash (only cash). If being shipped rather than driven you may help with draining the fuel and disconnecting the battery. I would recommend that the buyer send a shipper to pick up at your place or you may spend a day at some depot or port trying to get someone to accept the bike and sign for it.

Just what xgringo said. Have him come to the U.S. side and let him handle the rest.

I wouldn't tell him where you live [address], meet him at wall mart. Have a witness or two with you. Get cash, sign the title. Bye.

You won't have to tell him your address. It's on the title, isn't it? To protect yourself, I'd meet the guy at a Notary Public office and have everything notarized. But then the guy would have to pay Texas sales tax. Maybe I'm a little OCD with stuff like this but that's just me.

Be sure that the bike gets transferred so you are not on the hook for any future taxes. Cash in hand on the US side of the border - take a friend or two along when you meet. Good luck!

When I sold my Concours to an out of state buyer, I signed over the title and notarized it and then turned in the plate and registration. Registering the bike with the title is up to the buyer.

Don't forget, there is a lot of counterfeit cash out there, especially $100 bills.

Seems like nothing is safe anymore. :(
