Clutch slip in all gears.

Hey guys..

I now have 38,855 miles on my 1500 and after riding in two parades this week I now have clutch slip in all gears.

I've been researching the repair for this, and everyone keeps talking about replacing the spring.
My question is, is anyone replacing the clutch pads while they have the case open?
I like the idea of a quick and cheap fix, but I would hate to have to break the case open twice.

Clutch slip in all gears.

How long has it been slipping in any of the gears faxxxy? Did it start slipping in the higher gears and worked its way down to the lower gears?

Not that I'm aware of.. As a matter of fact, in the first parade, we were doing a lot of throttle goosing and I had solid lock up the entire parade.
The second parade was a little more tame and it was just a slow ride with a home coming queen candidate on the back. Lots of clutch time on that one.

I brought it home, it sat in the garage for a week and now it's slipping something aweful.

The spring is cheap and not a difficult fix. I would try the spring first and move forward if it continues to slip. I'd bet the spring will take care of your slipping problem. I haven't read any posts on anyone changing the plates because they were worn out.

Neither had I so I was worried that it was just a given that you replace plates and maybe I was missing something.

Thanks.

Don't forget a clutch cover gasket. A set of Judge's washers would be a good addition on an 01' too.

Clutch slip in all gears.

Use the Judges washers with the spring.
You should not need to replace any of the clutch discs and plates. You can measure them to make sure they are ok though.
When I replaced my spring, the plates and discs measured up like brand new. Its a fairly simple repair to do yourself, Gadgets fixit sight has all the info you need to do the complete job start to finish. It shouldn't cost anymore than about $50.oo to do it.

Clutch slip in all gears.

Spring and cover Plus shipping ~ $42 (Cheap Cycle Parts)
washer set ~ $35 (Judge)

So your cost is about $80, but the benefit will be great.

Just found this thread. The spring got too hot and lost it's temper. Do what everyone above said.

Clutch slip in all gears.

It has been my experience with my Nomads that the clutch spring holder "saws" the teeth off of the clutch spring over time. My 99' was nearly gone at 19,000 and the 03' was going at 13,000. I put Judge's washer set and Mean Streak springs in both bikes. Well worth the cost. I checked the clutch plates in the 99' when I changed the spring; they were fine.
