Senator Robert Byrd Dies At 92

Saw this morning that Senator Robert Byrd died at the age of 92. I know he did a lot of good things for the people of West Virginia. He was loyal to his home state for sure. Anyone have thoughts on him? He was once a member of the Ku Klux Klan. I think he served under 12 presidents.

Must have done something right to stay in that long.... still think a guy in his 80"s + probably is riding the clock at that point.

..and he is a classic example of why term limits are needed.

He's the only US senator that has been publicized as having been a KKK member and was a staunch opponent of the civil rights act. Do I remember Trent Lott having to step down as senate majority leader for much less than that?

On my news they said the guy was 92. I don;t care how good you are there needs to be some age limits. And then maybe not, because a guy born in 1917 should know a few things.

Mr. Byrd... never been a fan of him. ::)

He was the King of Pork... and that is just the beginning. ;)

I'll withhold my overall opinion of the man. :(" title="" border="0"/>

Like I said he did a lot for West Virginia but can't say he helped the United States very much. Don't want to offend my West Virginia friends on here but he should have been out of office many a year ago.

Senator Byrd.........alot of good things for West Va.............I just saw a story on CNN's Campbell Brown, No Bias, No Bull about West Virginia's "Corridor H". A "Stimulus" project.

They're getting $21 million in Stimulus money and $9 million in an earmark to do a little more work on this 4 lane highway, that has no traffic. Work was started in 1965 on a bunch of unconnected sections that only connect a few towns, with dead ends everywhere. Over a billion dollars has gone into the project; and they expect to put a billion more in before it's projected finsh date - 25 years from now.

The CNN crew took a drive on this big four-lane highway; and was the only vehicle on the road as far as the eye could see, at rush hour. It was supposed to be an economic boom to West Virginia when Byrd pushed for the money for it back in 1965. And they don't even know how it will benefit the state even when it's finally completed - in 2034.

SIXTY-NINE YEARS to build a multi-billion dollar highway, in a state with a small population, that nobody uses. That's part of where this emergency stimulus money is going.

I wonder how many hundreds or thousands of projects there are out there, just like this one, getting "Stimulus" money.

All this pork sh*t needs to be stopped. There were so many projects that Byrd started. Guess the workers in West Virginia got help even though the highway wasn't needed. One news type program did a show on all the projects he had started over the years. Most weren't needed but they were passed. He was a powerful senator no doubt. I am sure that each state has its share of senators and congressmen that do the same thing.

start term limits, eliminate retirement plans for those who chose to be a "Civil servant for the good of the country" if they exit their position with more than 3 times the net worth they entered with it gets confiscated just as the "corrupt CEO's and Villainous Bank execs" they are pointing the finger of greed at.

Amazing how they are making a killing but point out others that are doing the same thing.
Classic sheep herding.......

I totally agree on the term limits. How do we make that happen?
