Radio Install Assistance

Hi everyone. I want to install a radio in the fairing on my Nomad. Nice part is the speakers and and antenna are already there. I need however to pull power for the radio and this had not yet been done by the previous owner. The fairing on the bike also has the headlight built in and I do have access at the back of the fairing to the wiring harness that runs to the headlight, signals etc.

Are there any wires there that I could draw power from or will I have to run wires back to the fuse block area? ???

Thanks for any assistance that you can give.......

Mark.

If it were me doing it, I'd run a dedicated circuit from the battery to a relay, and trigger the relay off of the running light circuit up front. That way you won't leave it on and drain your battery. If it requires a always hot +12v to drive the clock and for the memory settings, I'd use one of the accessory connections in the headlight bucket for that. Those are always on and for something like that, it draws very little power.

Need Amps or watts draw of the radio.... Some of these draw a lot of amps and others don't.

+1000

Pretty much any radio will draw enough current that running it off any of the stock wiring is no good. Run a dedicated line from the battery to a relay to power it.

Thanks everyone....dedicated wiring it will be which makes sense as the radio has a 10 fuse.

One other thing, if I were you, I would wire it up with some type of "quick disconnect". That way when you remove the fairing for some type of service or maintenance, all you'll have to do is unplug it.

There ya go 10 amps is plenty enough for dedicated wiring... No wire on the bike can do that as this is the rate for the acc wires..

Nice little Tr-6 btw...

Thats what I did with my fairing, I used a 6 wire trailer plug to disconnect the wiring.

Just installed a Hoppe Fairing with radio. Instructions: 1 wire to battery ground ( - ) and the hot (+) wire to the brown ignition wire. This way when you shut the bike off the radio will shut off.
I connected the positive wire close to the rear of the fuse block.

Wired directly? You better check out the radio and see what is draws. Add that to what ever else is on that circuit, and be sure you won't fry things..

Bike and maratime radios tend to be heavy draw...

It doesn't mean the directions were right. Should have used a relay.
