Another (freakin) oil question
I know this has been addressed a million times, and that there are just as many opinions as posts, but....
I was curious what weight oil people from New England (or similar climates) find best. Not really concerned about brand or type, just looking for the preferred weight for our climate. I am on a 2002 Nomad 1500FI. Thanks (for putting-up with another oil question). Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Either a 10w40 or 5w40 would work. Don't drop to the 10w30.

The 10W40 is good,or I use the Rotella 15W40. Most important is keeping it at the right level and regular changes regardles of the type you use.

Thaks for the input.
The "right" level of oil is when the oil is half way up the glass window, when the bike is standing upright, right? |

if you look real close you will see a upper line and a lower line on the chrome case right next to the oil window keep the oil between these two lines.

Another (freakin) oil question
10 WINTER 40 , cut with 5 Winter 40 is around my usual mix.. With the bike level and plub I set the level cold at the 1/2 way mark after a oil change and run the engine a few moments and check. Then add to the 1/2 way mark if it isn't.
When the engine is hot and the oil is hot it will then read in the top of the glass. I use a little longer filter, so can't say how much in qts exactly, but then I never really measure oil anyway.

I add my oil with a large measuring cup, thanks to my wifes hand me downs. It takes 3.3 litres to refill after a change.

10W - 40 means you can ride at +10 to +40 in winter 20W - 50 means you can't ride as cold as +10, but you can ride at +20 to +50. This only applies in winter, and you can't ride at all in summer since there is no 10S - 40. see? Why you think I live in New Hampster anyway?
