Brakes

Has anyone else noticed that when applying both front and back brakes at speed that they grip, well, adequately. But in keeping the the front brake applied and pumping the rear peddle once, that then they really bites down nicely!

Maybe your brakes need to be bled ?

The 1700's have a linked braking system don't they ?

I never noticed. I have to try that tomorrow. I would think it should be the same as the first time you hit the brake. Otherwise it would be air in the brake lines, Maybe.

But since they are linked this could be a thing. Or not

Bled the brakes extensively twice!
Sure seems we should have maximum braking power on that first pump??

This is why I am asking for some more feed back.

Had linked brakes on my VTX 1800 (no ABS) worked great first pump.

My warrentee runs out September 1st so I would like to get this addressed before then if it is not normal...Thanks

It's normal. Does it in your car, too. The fluid return orifice in the master cylinder is microscopic and two squeezes in rapid succession will trap more fluid on the output side of the piston. If your initial pull is excessive or spongy there is a problem, but a firmer second pull is not necessarily indicative of one.

Maybe so, But do not sense this on my MDX at all.
Also initial pull is not excessive or spongy. Brakes well bled and work fine. Its just that they have much more bite on the second foot pump.

I am hoping others will try applying both brakes and then let up on the rear and reapply while holding the front brake pressure steady... and see what happens and post results..

My Lexus GX does it. Good firm pedal that gets even firmer with two rapid pumps. I've bled enough motorcycle master cylinders to know what I'm talking about, at least a little bit.

Not doubting your experience. But would still like to here from others
what there Vaquero/Voyagers are doing to confirm that this is "normal" or not for Vaquero/Voyagers.

Wondering if this is occurring on your 09 Nomad as well?

Yes, it occurs on my Nomad. No linked brakes, tho. My son bought Ivan's old Voyager recently, I'll try it on that, too. If you're still not satisfied then maybe you're just shopping for an answer you want

Don't over complicate the braking, best braking is both brakes, with increasing effort on the front brakes and lighter application on the rear. Use the rear brake for stability and tracking but not to the point of locking up the rear. Front brakes do most of the work, but use the rear brake to minimize front end dive. Done right the bike just squats into the stop . No reason to be pumping the rear brake. Whole idea is to keep the bike stable during braking with no pulsing of the brakes to upset the chassis, once you have brake loading established keep it on steady and smooth, more on the front less on the rear. Also, with floorboards always keep the heel of your boot on the floorboard and apply the rear brake with the ball of your boot. Never lift your foot off the floorboard to apply the rear brake.

Well I think this is very strange for any braking system to do this but I am guessing it is a result of the linked system....??
