Sea Foam = snake oil?

There's a radio show I like to listen to on Saturday mornings. It's an hour of automotive-related talk hosted by a very reputable owner of an independent repair shop. It's been on the air for years and people call in and ask automotive questions and the host or his guests (also automotive professionals) answer.

I was in the car with my wife last Saturday listening to the show as we drove to Costco. A caller was asking about some performance problem with his truck. He mentioned he ran a can of Sea Foam through the gas tank. The host said "when you mentioned Sea Foam, we both rolled our eyes". He went on to say that "Sea Foam is one of those "miracle cures" that people swear will clean your fuel injectors, cure baldness, and just about everything else..."

Now he didn't say it wasn't any good, or didn't do what it says it will on the can, he just was making the point that it can't possibly live up to its reputation.

I just thought it was interesting because I've never heard it mentioned on the program before.

That's interesting. I've used it before and found it to be a good product. My mileage actually did improve after using it, but everyone has their opinion I guess.

Cures baldness? I'm getting a can! Up to this time I've been using Preparation H since it shrinks tissue. I figure it would shrink the top of my scalp and draw the hair up to just a part line. Doesn't work. ::)

Cheers!

Don't worry Todd, BD spends A LOT of time in San Fran. Asking someone "Can I push in your stool for you?" has a completely differnent meaning for BD than it does in the rest of the known, and sane, world. :)

BD, are you the dude who woke up hung over one morning and picked up the tube of Preparation H and brushed their teeth. No biggie. At least the swollen gums improved I heard. Lol

Geeze you guy are harsh....

I think what the radio tech was saying, is that nothing in a bottle will fix a mechanical problem.

Sea Foam isn't going to fix a stretched timing chain, isn't going to fix a bad rod bearing, may not fix a really bad injector that you need to remove and blow varsol thru under high pressure, which may or not fix the injector spray pattern.

Sea Foam isn't going to stop oil or coolant leaks, and isn't going to stop the same in pourous castings..

Sea Foam isn't going to clean out crud in a carb that went dry and the fuel has tirned into green goo, brown goo or white dusty powder which i know is going to raise all hell here, but that powder ain't coke.

On the other hand Sea Foam can re wet a fuel washed cylinder, can in time cut a laquer build in rings, fuel line carbs and injectors.

It will eat some carbon build on top of pistons, on valve stem shanks and in ports.

Sea Foam is a good alternate to engine fog for long term storage.

Sea Foam can bring back compression in a engine if the engine was over heated and a laquer base set up, which is more frequent in 2 strokes, if time is applied...

I just had to do that to my husky saw.. over heated it cutting, it lost compression, and before i yanked the jug i hit it with Sea Foam, and brown mung poured out the exhaust.

Fired that saw up it ran well, and shut it off and Sea Foamed it again. I will use it as soon as the sleet stops.

I bought this saw used in 95' and have taken it to hell and back every year since.. it sure don't look new..
