coolant boiling

the bushfires are no direct worry to me at the moment as i am 60 miles to the north of them at the moment. the fatality count is nearer 300 now and rising. thanks for all your help with the bike, i have been busy with work this week so i havent had a chance to take a look at it yet, but i supose thats the joy of running your own buisiness, theres always more to do... i normally make time to ride 4 or 5 times a week so im chewing at the bit to get out for a ride.

Eww I don't know about going for any rides on that bike doing this! I would avoid that big time... Get it fixed or burn it up is the deal here... This problem isn't good... You are most certainly over heating the bike, and that begins pretty quick measured in a few minutes time, maybe as long as 8 before you are over heating.

they are a great bike arent they. i rarely ride the xj but when i do i realise why i love it so much. i am meant to be selling it at the moment (wife says so) but im not really worried if it dosent get sold. i have put the new t/stat in the nomad and also got a new cap but forgot to get the coolant (i got too excited in the shop). i have removed the radiator and flushed it out but no crud came out, the old t/stat opened when put in hot water but i put the new one in anyway. ($80 for a thermostat, ouch...) i will get the coolant tommorrow and bleed the system properly and hopefully my problem will be cured.

hmmm I dunno might just try that with plain water for the first go round. If that works, then it isn't all that much trouble to install coolant, and if it don't work you still have clean coolant..

Just because you pulled and flushed a rad, don't mean many cross tubes ain't clogged.

I did a rod out on my chevy rad and water ran clean thru it too, but many cross tubes were clogged up, and not doing any work what so ever.

Rodding out might not be a rterm used where you are for all I know. What that meand here is to unsolder one tank off any rad, and while flushing with water stuff a gas welding rod in each and every cross flow tube till each and every one of them runs clear and shows flow.
Then solder the tank cover back on the rad..

Both my wife and I got blisters from doing that.

if there is a problem with either fluid this time feel for cold spots on the rad and take yer time to do it right, just don't get a burn.

The entire rad should be over all hot and if it is your hand should tell you...

If it begins to act up shut the engine off and listen to hear if it is boiling inside.

I am really hoping the T stat was stuck. Don't throw that T stat away, if you have go get it back. It could be handy for other things and other tests.. It might be a temp fix if need be.

thanks macmac, i have kept the t/stat as i find it hard to throw anything out. she is all back together now and seems to be running fine. i have done 200km since bleeding the system and all is going fine, no boiling overheating or anything. i finished her off on valantines day then went inside and informed the wife that i had the best valantines day pressie ever, my mistress was out of hospital (the wife named the nomad the mistress) i dont think it was what she wanted to hear. thank you greatly for all your help, it has been essential to getting the nomad running sweetly again i really appreciate your time and knowlege in helping me with this issue. cheers. madcow...
