help wanted hyper charger exp. an asset

hi there folks i own a 2001 1500 fi nomad (stock)and found a great deal on a hyper charger and v&h exhaust off a 02 1500fi classic. 1 can i even do these mods. 2 what should i know before attempting these mods 3 what parts, rigging, and extras am i going to have to get before mod. its early spring and the weather is looking great so I'm trying to be as prepared as possible to do these mods in short time. On the other hand I'm a real cheap bugger who likes to do all my own work but i lack the knowledge and experience all you fine people have. All help and advice is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance. Bobcat.

Bobcat, the HyperCharger should fit fine, just make sure you get ALL the parts that go with it, but on the exhaust, unless it's a 2 into 1, I don't think it will fit with the saddlebags.

I doubt the exhaust will work, we have a pipe on each side of the bike. Its a lot different on the classics.

Which hypercharger? Model? and did you get the instructions that should have come with it when it was new? If not as long as you know the model you can download the instructions from the company website. It will have a parts list. If you have pics post them. Make sure all the parts are there as stated. Including the backing plate. If that is missing then it won't work. I just got a Pro to put on, so I've been OVER the install MANY times. Not a hard job from the instructions. You may wish to check out Gadget's pages to familiarize yourself with the install as well. Do you have STOCK pipes now? Also when installing the hypercharger (as you will be putting on pipes I imagine?) then you will need a fuel processor to richen the air/fuel mixture in your FI bike. There are several options. Cobra, TFI or even the PCIII (but it requires a MAP downloaded from a computer).
Your best option is either Cobra or TFI. They can be had as a plug n play or as a slice in. Again Gagets pages has instructions on installation so you can review them to see if you feel confident in doing them. Not that hard, I'll be doing mine soon. I have a gutted goats belly and debaffled exhaust on mine and doing the intake and air/fuel will make it breath much better.

Depends on your wrenching skills AND what TOOLS you have at your disposal. If you take your time and follow the instructions you'll be fine.

If you were closer, it would only take a few hours to hook ya up and get these things installed.

But get the model number and then the instructions for a complete parts list.

Who made the adapter for the HC?

SCP's is the best, Thunder's is good, there are some crappy ones out there.

Some of the crappy ones have caused the throttle body to crack in the past.

If you haven't bought the parts yet I would pass. The exhaust will not work with the Nomad bags, and without the bags you will have to fabricate mounting brackets.

I would agree to pass on the exhaust, as were not designed for the Nomad and would be difficult in fabricating brackets.

As for the HC, it (if complete) and is the model (that is what you need to know) that is designed for the Vulcan (Classic FI and Nomad 1500 the intake is the same) then it comes with the adapter plate as part of the kit. If it's an HD HC that someone bought an adapter plate from?? then maybe. More info needed to make that determination. If it's a very good deal and IS the proper unit then it is worth it.

I agree the other adapters maybe not up to par (but I think I have an idea why).

I've seen a few adapter plates that do not address the movement of the throttle. On the original plastic adapter plate it is held on by 4 bolts. When you take it off 2 of those are into the block. If the after market plate does not come with brackets for the lower 2 bolts to attach BACK to the engine then the throttle is not secured as it was before and could move causing cracking and other issues as you state. I imagine it's the same on HD and other bikes. So the problem is if the adapter plate (if trying to use a generic intake) you put on does not address this issue, it could cause more headaches later.

So again if this is the ORIGINAL HC designed FOR the Vulcan 1500 FI engine then it HAS the adapter plate with it (as long as ALL the parts are there).

So find out the model number, check the company website for that and download the installation instructions and review the parts list and then you'll know all the parts are there.

The link will take you to a pic and description of the Thunder Mfg adapter.

Neither the Thunder or SCP attach to the cylinders. These are the only type you want to use.

The following is from the VROC archives:

During our travels this past week I took advantage of our geographic
proximity to Phoenix and made an appointment with Thunder Manufacturing.
The purpose was to dyno-tune my 1500 Nomad which has the Thunder 95 cu inch
motor kit in it. Since installing the rebuilt motor and having a custom dyno
jet
map done in Canada, I've continued to have issues with heat and Pinging in a
certain RPM Range.
We arrived at Thunder's shop on Thursday morning a little earlier than our
appointment time, and fortunately for us Trent wasn't too busy and got to
work on the bike
right away.

The fix was relatively simple, with a 1/4 inch knocked off the flywheel
where the ignition pickups read, the timing was a little off today 5°.
Combined that with a proper dyno tuning map done by Trent the Nomad runs
incredibly better. It was a real pleasure watching Trent screwing with
everything on my bike he and in fact everyone in the shop where really keen
to get my Nomad purring just right and man did they ever do a number on her.
At the end of the day when all was done, I was asked if I'd ever seen a
Nomad pull wheelies....without dropping the clutch, just power...I hadn't
until then.

The Hyper Charger Problem.

Trent explained that just before the Christmas break he had a customer bring
in a 1500 Meanstreak for tuning with the exact same unit I had on my bike.
After much screwing around and having some difficultly tuning that customers
bike they decided to take a close look at the intake system and revelled a
cracking problem.

After doing a base line Dyno run on my bike and while the machinist was
shaving the flywheel, Trent decided to remove my Hypercharger and inspect
the same area on my Throttle body, sure and sh*t he confirmed I had the same
problem. I'm a little lucky, it's not as extreme as the guy with the
Meanstreak, looks like we caught mine it in time.
The Throttle Body is cracked just ahead of the Butterflies, the customer
with the Streak I believe he said had cracks both before and after the
butterfly's and the customer replaced the throttle body.

Now some of you folks may already be aware of this, if your not and you have
a Kuryakyn Pro Series Hypercharger or a Hyper charger that uses the same
rigid mounting system that the Pro Series uses on your bike right now,
there appears to be IMHO a flaw in the mounting design of unit to the
engine. I, like many others I'm sure didn't think twice when we brought the
unit about installing it and assumed that through proper R&D, Kuryakyn had
come up with the best way to install the product to Kawi motors. I'm not
sure if this effects just the 1500 motors or not and maybe it was just
purely coincidence that Thunder had 2 bikes in 3 weeks with the same problem
with the same hyper charger..But if you own one, consider taking a look next
time your out at your bike, If you can see your throttle body easy enough
with a flash light check it out for cracks on the underside, you may have to
remove the Hyper-Charger to get the best view, certainly if your trying to
see inside the throttlebody you will.

The cause appears to be the 2 rigid mount brackets designed by Kuryakyn to
mount the adapter plate to the engine jugs on both sides where your old
stocker brace used to be, you know the one, the little green bracket with 2
rubber grommets in the middle that you stock air cleaner box used to bolt
too. By hard mounting the hypercharger adapter plate to the cylinders
without any cushioning the engine vibration transfers directly through the
adapter plate to the Throttle Body, this appears to be the route cause of
the cracking.

I now have a shiny new Thunder Tear drop airkit installed using the stock
mounting bracket that has the rubber grommets. My Throttle body should be
okay for now but it's likely I'm going to have to now replace it, that's if
the crack gets worse. I'm certainly going to be keeping a close eye on it.

If you've got one of these units and you followed the manufactures
recommended installed instructions like I did, and you've been riding your
bike for awhile with it installed, you may want to consider a close
inspection of your throttle body.

I hear that the throttle body's are kinda pricing, was told over $500 but
haven't checked with my local dealer yet.

end quote

Please don't use the Kury mounting adapter as throttle bodies are expensive.

I think extra grommets (size) that have a bit more dampening would help. I did not say RIDGID mounting, but have seen some that don't have any other support at all and then your hanging all the weight off the end just on the throttle body itself which would not be good.

I know that engine vibration can cause issues. I was planning on installing larger grommets in the support plates (or making my own) for the throttle body 2 bottom bolts. This would give it support however still provide some movement. So I appreciate the info as well. Will address that on the install of mine.
One question when you did you intake which did you use? And which fuel processor as well just for reference.
Thanks
Scott

One more item in favor of the Thunder Adapter...the Kury Pro HC sticks out so far that it interfers with your right knee. Using the Thunder adapter and a regular HC the combination only sticks out about 1/2 inch more than the stock dog bowl.

I have the Cobra FI processor. The HC I had used the Thunder adapter, I believe it has gone through a couple of hands since I had it. I think Bubba has it now.

I have a SCP adapter in the warehouse that I used before going to 'Chucksters' single plate system.

If you are interested I'll make someone a killer deal on the SCP piece. It's the polished one.

I got a 9408 HC Pro from close to me for a really good price. I don't think I'd have bought the HC (HD style) and then a Thunder adapter plate due to the cost. This one has all in one. I realize that some complain about the right leg. So what I am planning from the start is to extend the right floor board to fix that issue. As for hitting my knee on it, I'm not sure I'll have the problem, but we will see. IF this doesn't work out then I'll likely go with Joe's single plate adapter and use my own Air "kit". I know I can sell it for what I paid no problem so not worried about extra parts laying around.
Lots of work to do this week..

wow that is some great info to know. Thanks! Now is there a p# on these adapter plates so i could identify witch one i will be getting. If i end up getting one that isn't what we want then could i just use a proper adapter, or grommet the one i get? Man i was all excited i found this parts bike with all this stuff but I'm a little worried now. Oh well I'm sure i could sort it out (with the help of the kawanow crew) and it will be done right. unfortunately i wont know what I'm getting till Friday when i go pick it up. Again thanks for the help thus far.

If your buying the parts at a really good price? Then if it happens that you can't use them you could resell again depending on what your getting them for? Or you maybe able to use that HC (for example) with an after market adapter plate to make it work. But without knowing the part # of what your getting it's kinda hard to advise. Can you get pictures? That may help in identifying it.

Pull the HC and post some pics of it and the associated parts. It will be easy to tell what you have.

when i get the parts i will take some pics and post them to hopefully identify what i have and go from there. my fingers are crossed for it to be a good one and a fuel processor comes with it instead of having to buy one.
