Speedometer Repair

Has anyone ever taken their speedometer apart? Mine on my Nomad 1500 has decided to stop working. There's something wrong inside the sealed housing. I like to take things apart to see how they work but I don't like doing it to a part that is in use. The chrome ring holding the glass in must be glued on. I didn't want to break it by prying on it. Does anyone have an extra for sale or know a place that repairs mechanical speedometers?

Speedometer Repair

You say it's a mechanical one, have you checked the cable?

Speedometer Repair

Yes. Took the cable out and flushed it good with brake cleaner and re-lubed it. It is free and turns easily. It's something in the head. It will even stick if you spin it by hand with a tool inserted in the drive. The part the cable screws on seems loose in the housing. I don't know if it's suppsed to be that way or not. It will spin the needle past the peg and keep it going like a prop. I just disconnected it for now.

Speedometer Repair

There is a place in Toronto that repairs speedos, They mainly repair instruments. Im not sure of the name but could probably find out if need be. Maybe there is an instrument repair facility near you as well.
