85 mph on 41-mile toll road

A 41-mile toll road between Austin and San Antonio will have the highest speed limit in the country when it opens in November. Utah is the only other state with 80-m.p.h. speed limits. The New York Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/11/us...d.html?_r=1&hp

I didn't know we were the only ones with the higher speed limits.

Kris thought I was speeding.....and was having a hard time keeping up.

Its about time some places had a decent speed limit. I'd like to see it unlimited in certain open parts between towns, like they have in Germany.

I'm not so much a fan of higher or unlimited speed limits. For some who know how to really drive/ride it might be OK, but for most they can't handle 100 kms per hr.
I made a few trips through the Rocky Mountain Canyon/ #1 Hwy of Canada
and I was in disbelief on how bad people drive.

You would need a vehicle that is capable of high speed riding, and a Nomad is not that type of bike. The BMW sport tourers, and the Kawi Concourse would be a couple of better choices.

I knew you weren't speeding, but that was the first time I had ever seen posted 80 mph speed limits. I kept up on my Nomad (just barely)...but it was tough maintaining 80-85 mph for such a long stretch (150-200 miles). Anyone who has seen me travel knows I don't waste any space.......so with my large carcass and a full load, it was tough to keep up to Jared with his 90 lb. body weight and the one change of underwear he brings.....

My Voyager on the other hand....that thing will glide right along at that speed and love every mile of it....

As I recall, the last time I was in Utah, the 80 MPH limit was only on a couple of short stretches of I-15. It is not all posted 80 MPH. I think Jared was speeding.

BD and I came south on I-15 from Salt Lake on the way back from Custer. I was pulling a trailer and we were bucking a 30+ MPH headwind for a good 200 miles. It was all I could do to keep it at 80 in those stretches. I think when I gassed up in Cedar City, I averaged 23 MPG.

Uh? That is the normal Interstate speed on my daily commute to and from Nashville. Oh, silly me, the LEGAL speed limit! I so sorry!

Of course, -I'm- not driving those speeds, just reporting what I see in the other lane!

There was a time in the 60s that Montana did not have speed limits on many of it highways.

It's mostly 80 mph from Cedar City to Nephi, with a few 75 mph zones in the rural areas and 65 in the cities. Perhaps speeding a bit, but I try to keep it pinned at 80, which would be only 5 over in the few 75 zones. Once you hit Utah or SLC valley, you're lucky if you can go 65 mph.

Nevada too. Actually into the early 70s until the first gas crisis. It was called R&P. Reasonable and Proper. Nothing like rolling across the desesrt at 100-130 all day. Wyoming was a speedy place also. Ahh, for the old days.

Back when the nationwide 55 MPH limit was in effect, it was widely known you could drive much faster in Wyoming. The cops were pretty lenient. At the Colorado state line on I-25, the sign said "Welcome to Colorado", "55 MPH speed limit strictly enforced".

If you've ever ridden that stretch of highway between Austin and San Antonio, you'll find it's very flat and boring.

Last time I was in West Texas, there were stretches of I-10 and I-20 where the speed limit was 80.
