2017 Road Glide

I took a 2017 Harley Road Glide for a test ride 2 weeks ago. Wanted to see how the new Milwaukee 8 ran. I must say it had very good performance, better suspension and good handling. I have been waiting for the Harleys to become more up to date in my mind. Now that they have, the one I road was 29K. I simply don`t understand the price and don`t think I ever will. I know a lot of folks just go the payment route and are happy with there Harleys. I could muster up enough cash for one but don`t think I ever will. The old 2012 Voyager has 40k on it and running great. But never say never I guess.

Most of the higher end touring bikes/trikes are $25-$30k. Victory, Indian, Can-Am, Harley and Honda are all that high. Also, Harley has such a loyal following that they could probably charge another 1/3 higher and still sell plenty of bikes. The only other major player with the same loyalty is the Honda Gold Wing.

The Milwaukee 8 reminds me of my old Nomad 1500, with a bit more umph. That said, it still doesn't pull quite like my VN2000. For 30 grand, you can pick up 3 to 4 nice used Kawasaki, Honda, and Yamaha bikes and have one for each riding style you wanted, and you would still have money left over to accessorize and put gas in the tanks.

Better start start saving up cause the Harley itch is like Malaria. Once you get it, it never goes away. You may think you've gotten over it but a year later it's back. I'm keeping my eye on the used Switchback market. Usually their going for around $10,500 now but I saw a low mileage 2012 on Craigslist for $8500. That was a good deal. Wish I were in the market.

Rented a Harley Street Glide a month or so ago when my wife and I visited family in east tennessee. Very nice ride and because the engine had so much torque it actually helped "pull" me thru the twisties so I was very impressed with the handling. I believe all motorcycles and cars are way overpriced these days, but I like a basic vehicle not one loaded up with all the tech crap which they all seem to be these days and that adds alot to the price.

A good point Dale. Some of the latest high tech "improvements" seem to me to be more of a liability. For example HD's new electronic throttle control. Whens the last time you heard of a bike breaking down along side of the road due to a throttle cable malfunction? Ahhhhhhh...never? I think the engineers have to justify their existence to keep their jobs and when they run out of ideas they come up with this kinda crap.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming Harleys, I look forward to owning another one, but I hope they refrain from turning them into such high tech machines that the reliability starts suffering.

How was it $29k? Not even the road glide Ultra is $29k. My 16 Ultra worked out to just over $20k that I bought last January. MSRP was $26K.

I traded in 3 bikes at once that had a total mileage of 100,000 miles, and they gave me $6000 over what I could have hoped to sell them for. $10,000 over trade in value.

Kawasaki has electronic throttle too. All bikes with electronic cruise control have electronic throttle so the throttle grip doesn't move under your hand.

I blame Kawasaki for me finally buying a Harley. I was happy with my Voyager XII with the inline 4. When it got to where parts were getting hard to come by, I bought the Vulcan Voyager to replace it. Then I learned how much more Harley has to offer a touring rider over Kawasaki. Also, with a Harley, you can buy individual parts. Cracked a saddlebag lid, just buy a lid, and not an entire saddlebag lime Kawasaki forces you to do.

It was a Road Glide ultra. Had 2 tone paint and upgraded wheels. Didn't sound like they would deal to much.

Was it a Road Glide Ultra? what color? Paint options make a difference in price too with HD. 29K sounds on the high side.

Find one with single color and stock wheels. Probably save a couple thousand.

If you liked the inline 4, you should have checked out the K1600.

They sat weird to me. Same with the Goldwing.

Many of us were hoping for an updated Voyager with all the pluses of the Voyager XII. Lightweight for a full tourer. Hydraulic Valve Lash Adjusters. Centrally located fuel tank. Modern safety and comfort features and direct injection was all it needed.

I beg to differ. My Victory Vision had electronic cruise but it still had throttle cables. Grip never moved with the cruise. Same with the Indians. Never paid much attention to the rest.

The GT and GTL have different seats. The GTL feels goldwingish and the GT feels like my RT, which is sort of UJM. The k bike is lighter than other touring options. The only downside is the valve service. Anything that spins over 6000 rpm probably won't have hydraulic valves. I agree Kawasaki made a mistake with the voyager, but if it used the concours platform, valve adjustments would be part of owning it. I guess it depends on what one wants.
