2014 NCR rally ideas

I heard there may be an interest in meeting in Missouri ??? There's almost 2 years between now and then, but a wise man once told me "it's never too early to start planning." (It was Ray )

Kick this around and give some feed back - we have a year or so to fine tune and make plans. - Are these ride times too long considering riding as a group and adding in necessary stops?
(it's no coincidence the destinations shown are eateries )

Hannibal, MO rally point. Northern Missouri, and home of author Mark Twain
• Need to determine fuel/rest/scenic stops
• Missouri is a helmet-law state. Everyone must be helmeted during Missouri portion of rides

Day 1:
• Ride to Fast Eddie’s Bon Air, Alton, IL:
https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=H...,2,3,4&t=m&z=9
o Google Estimated: 3 hr 37 minutes
o Great biker destination with CHEAP food
o 2 ferry crossings – Both FREE . . . I think. Confirm cost and functionality
o Potential scenic stop, Hannibal, MO “Lovers’ Leap” lookout point.
o Potential scenic stop, Alton also has some lookout points for view

• Back to Hannibal:
https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=1...,2,3,4&t=m&z=9
o Google Estimated: 2 hr 44 minutes
o No Ferry
o TO and FROM both go through Grafton, IL another favorite biker destination. Little to do, but LOTS of bikes if we just want to park at a bar/grill and rest (but only 30 minutes away from Fast Eddie’s)

Day 2:
• Ride to Burger Barge, East Peoria, IL
https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=h...,3,4,5&t=m&z=9
o Google estimated: 3 hr 19 minutes
o Potential interesting stop: 2nd Chance Customs, Pekin, IL (the shop that built Don’s custom Kawasaki 900 bagger, and other custom metrics. Owner, Roger, always has projects going and loves to talk about ideas)

• Back to Hannibal:
https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=h...1,2,3&t=m&z=10
o Google estimated: 3 hr 9 minutes
o Only slightly different return route

Southern Missouri has better riding, but we shouldn't get too far away from our people who would attend. - But I'll throw that out there. 2-3 more hours south might offer more challenging roads? - We're so far out on timing, I will loosely put together another base point option sometime soon.

When I mentioned Missouri, I was more interested in going south / southwest of St. Louis into another section of the U.S. where some of the best roads are found.

I like all the roads in that section of Missouri, and particularly liked the roads within a 100 miles of Johnson Shut-ins S.P. and Elephant Rock S.P. Some of the best motorcycle / sports-car roads around in the Midwest.

It has been a few years since I have been there... but once you have ridden those roads... you do not forget.

As a last comment... my "hometown" was Pekin, IL. While seeing the bike-shop would be cool... there isn't anything else to see in Pekin or while riding there. The group would likely be bored out of their minds. Just saying...

I agree, further south is better. Lots better roads and scenery. How far is too far for our region to meet? - You don't have to go very far south of St Louis (in MO) to get great riding.

A regional rally has never been held outside of a region before -- other than a couple regions have combined to put together a rally. I know it was frowned-upon previously when the idea was brought-up.

Given that our region has few great riding areas, moving just outside of the region was just an idea I threw around.

Areas worth riding in our region were determined a few years ago as being: Wisconsin, Southern Illinois, Parts of Minnesota, and the Black Hills of South Dakota.

If you really wanted the best place to ride in our region again, it would have to be the Black Hills. The only problem discussed with that is that it is on the farthest side of the region - thus possibly making it difficult for some to get to.

I don't envy you and Ray for the "chore" ahead in planning...

As much as I like riding Missouri, this is the NORTH CENTRAL REGION we are talking about. I believe there are plenty of great places to ride and to visit that are in the NORTH CENTRAL REGION. Just saying.

I am an outsider looking in, I will ride to any destination.
Jay, I was at Fast Eddies earlier this year a great place to go had a blast. I did take both ferries & both are free. I will be returning this year, we will make plans.
Gibby, it is all about planning. The ride to MO is a day trip for you the way you put miles on that bike ;-)
