Regarding Judges Washers and Meanstreak Spring

I just had my Clutch slip under hard acceleration -- seeing as I had just picked up my newly purchased Nomad from the Dealer and this was my first ride I took it back complaining It cannot have passed a Safety check as I cannot pass anyone without clutch slipping.

The dealer took it right in and installed the Meanstreak Spring keeping original plates. Yes the Nomad responds much better and really feels connected and no slippage full throttle 5th gear at 60Mph.

My question since the Judges Washers are not installed with this new Spring am I domed to another failure in the next 39,000 Miles or are they (Judges Washers) needed on this last model year 2008 of the 1600 Nomad.

I gotta know as I would like to avoid taking her apart again to install these Judges Washers as I have them on order for some time now but they are very slow to arrive.

Northern Dancer,

Thanks,

Ron

I could be wrong but I think the judges washers are not absolutely necessary on the 1600's ? I had 60,000 kms on my 05 Nomad when I sold it and none of the clutch components had ever been replaced and the clutch was working fine, no issues at all.

I'd probably leave it alone since your already done the job. For a $25.00 spring replacement its not worth tearing it down again. You will get a few seasons out of the new spring as it is now, and can install the Judges washers next time if you need.

Yours likely was due to start slipping as mine had just over 60,000 Kilometers when it started slipping.

Still would be nice to know if on the later Model 1600 Nomads should the star washer be removed and Judges Washers installed -- is it recommended or necessary?

First post on this form, hope it's ok with everyone, I'm from Canada, I have a 2004 1500 classic E7 34,000 miles on it and for the last week have been researching and reading about replacing my clutch spring, I also put in my order a couple days ago from Ez-On web site for Judges washers but now don't think I'll use Judges washers, because my 04 E7 has that 'star shaped washer', I've been referring to it as the 'indexing washer', which was installed by Kawasaki beginning with 2003-2004 1600 A1-A2 and 2004 1500 E7, the Meanstreak clutch spring part only being used is from the 2002-2003 1500 P1 & P2 models only and Meanstreak began to use the same spring as E7 beginning in 2004. Beginning with 2003 1600 A1 & A2 and 2004 1500 E7 the Vulcans began to have that 'indexing washer' and a new holder, which are part numbers indexing washer (star washer) 13280-1306, and new holder 13280-1307. I believe from reading that Judges washers are being used on older holder part 13091-1494 which are on all Vulcans Prior to A1-A2 & E7 models. So here's my thinking, if your Vulcan has the new holder 13280-1307 and indexing washer 13280-1306 you don't need Judges washers, just install the MS spring P1 & P2 92145-1449 along with that indexing washer onto the your new holder, or if your Vulcan is prior years without the indexing washer, you have a choice, you can install Judges washers + P1 P2 MS spring on your older holder, or else you can order and install the new holder + indexing washer + P1 P2 MS spring. I think you either decide between using Judges washers or using the indexing washer but not both. One thing I am now trying to find out is about the automatic clutch slippage feature, what part in the clutch causes it to happen, because I'd rather not have that feature. I am still learning so please feel free to add or correct this post.

I am going to try to reply to your question because I have been researching and leaning this past week about the Vulcan clutch spring, and from what I have gathered, the problem with premature clutch spring wear has been on earlier Vulcan models that did not have a washer on the holder between spring and holder, whereby the clutch spring teeth was rubbing up against the holder with no washer to absorb the wear since those Vulcan models did not have a stock washer. So Judges washers were being installed to prevent premature spring teeth wear. Then Kawasaki began in 2003 on the A1 models to add their own version of Judges washers and came out with the indexing washer and new holder, since your Nomad has this new indexing washer (star shaped washer), you don't need Judges washers now, your Dealer installed a MS spring along with your stock indexing washer and your new MS spring teeth is now up against the indexing washer which is up against the holder, you don't need Judges washers now.

My clutch is not slipping but I am curious.
I looked at an exploded version of the clutch on line and did not see where one spring would go. I did see a place for 8 springs.
Question, how many springs do you guys install when doing the clutch repair.

uif this is a stupid question bear with me as I have been called stupid by in a PM recently by a guy.

There is only one spring, it looks like a saucer shape with a hole on the centre.

I hate to disagree but...there is the clutch spring with the teeth, then there are three limiter springs. The three limiter springs are the one which are assembled ()(.

Very well explained Sir!! Now I feel much better knowing my Clutch Spring Teeth will not be wearing pre-maturally and best of all I don't have to take it apart again to install the Judges Washers.

Funny thing though as my original Spring that was apparantly getting weak has what seems to me to have the identical pull as the new Meanstreak Clutch Spring and it don't slip?

I have only put 300 Kilometers on my Nomad since I got my hands on it March 31, 2012 and have completed a complete service and added the following Items:

  • Installed 5/8 Diameter 1-Inch Titanium Posts under Floor Boards for Sparkers
  • Installed two Big Bike Illuminated Push Button Chrome Handlebar Switches FUSED individually
  • Installed Photon Blaster-A with Alert Function by tapping Brake twice within 1 Second (use thiese to increase visability)
  • Installed Signal Dynamics LED Running Flashing Brake Light Bar with Bypass Toggle Switch (Again for visability|)
  • Installed Hardline Engine Hour meter with lifetime Battery using RAM Mounts
  • Installed Illuminated Battery Bug Device using RAM Mounts
  • Installed DORAN TPMS System with Optional RED LED Light Alert
  • Wired and Mounted Garman 330 GPS using Ram Mounts to power on/off with Ignition fused Circuit or stay live by using a Bike Bike switch via blocking 6 amp Diodes to prevent cross feeding the two circuits
  • Prewired for use of Optional Garman NUVI 1450 GPS that is in my Car
  • Wired a 15 Amp Supply to Headlight switched by Relay controlled by Ignition
  • Wired a 15 Amp Supply to Headlight switched by a heavy duty Toggle Switch which is used to reset Battery Bug and DORAN TPMS
  • Install Baron’s Bullet White Face Tachometer
  • Installed Electronic Deer Alert operated by Big Bike Switch Fused in Headlight controlled by Bike Bike Switch
  • Installed HID Headlight 35Watt 5000K with High/Low Beam feature
  • Re-Wired Driving Lights and Off/On Switch from Front Running Light Circuit to 15Amp relay switched Circuit
  • Fused two 15Amp Circuits to headlight and Battery Maintainer/Heated Glove Power Plug
This is not even close to what I have done with my Goldwing, ST1300PA, & Burgman 650 Exectutive -- But I absolutely promised myself I was not going to get carried away with my Nomad and only add what was absolutely necessary.

Northern Dancer,

Just saying,

Ron

I think you've been duped . Another member on here ordered a set too and never did receive them.

I sell them too. If you order them this weekend I'll ship them on Monday. Here is my Ebay listing for the washers.
