Thunder "Big Bore" Kit

Has anyone here installed the Thunder engine cylider kit on their Nomad?

Looks like it adds about another 100cc to the engine and more HP and torque. Just thinking for someday down the road when the engine starts to get a little tired and is ready for a rebuild.

If you do it, be prepared to put bigger valves in and flow the heads.

Scott did this to a 99 Nomad and it would keep up with his V2K. But there was as much money and effort in doing the heads as was involved in the big bore kit.

Cams and headwork will deliver more seat of the pants response than adding 100cc.

I think Thunder has an exchange program with the cams, or at least they used to.

Certainly not anything that I'm considering now, but who knows down the road once my Kawi GTPP expires and the engine is ready for a little "refreshing". I really love my Nomad and how I currently have everything set up so doing some mods to give it a little extra "ooomph" may make sense than trading up for a newer model when the time comes.

So an extra 100 cc, cams, heads reworked, a Chuckster's air intake kit and a Power Commander (or similar) should turn the Nomad into a real screamer, I would think.

Cost? I estimate about $2,500, maybe $3,000 maximum. I suspect that amount probably wouldn't go too far towards the trade in on a new Vaquero!

When is somebody going to stroke one of these motors? It's bore is already 4 freekin inches (same size as a HD 110).. Stroking it would produce same well needed torque down low...

Wouldn't that require a custom ground/cast (whatever) crank as well as all new internals?

Longer connecting rods a new crank with the pins further outside the throws and lower domed pistons. But since you have to pull the engine anyway this is the route I'd go......

I know kiser and kawi built one and some guy
has been running it and has spent a small fortune on it
Hopefully someone will offer a bolt on system with all the bugs worked out

Hi fellow Canadian,

How many Kilometers on your 2008 Nomad? I have just purchased a 2008 Nomad that has been looked after as I could not find a mark on it and all service was done at dealer on schedule.

My Nomad has 63,000 Kilometers (39,147 Miles) on clock and was wondering what I can expect before it needing serious work? I have had following done before delivery - Grease Swing Arm & Drive Shaft both ends & Wheel Spline - Replace Fork Oil and grease & Adjust Steering - Replace Clutch & Brake Fluid and bleed for Air -- replace Brakes Pads & Spark Plugs - Pressure Lubricate Throttle Cables - Replace Engine Oil & Filter - Replace Rear Drive Oil - Replace AntiFreeze and Flush Cooling System

I am looking forward to my first ride but we are having a snow storm presently with several Inches on the ground already.

Hoping I will be getting at least a 100,000 Miles on the Nomad with it being reliable. My Goldwing has passed 100,000 and is just broke in.

Im planning on attending the south central rally in van buren AK this year and I think he is one of the people putting it on. so hopefully I will get a chance to meet him and see his bike
Im also not surprised he is from OK when I was dragracing some of the fastest turbo bikes in the country came out of OK

You should easily be able to get 100,000 miles, double that is not out of the question either. A fella has put 255,000 miles on his bike.

That fellow would be Quitin Grubbs of GA. I still see Wand and Q at some MTF events in the south. He has a Venture, Wee-Strom, Nomad and a Drifter in the garage now.
