FI Idle

2001 1500L FI. Owned this about a month. Been very impressed with how smoothly it starts without ever having to use the choke (first FI bike), runs beautifully and shifts like a dream. Yesterday was riding and noticed it was idling much faster. Today, washed it and cranked it and idle was immediately much faster than "normal". Let it warm up, checked choke, and it never slowed. When I put it in gear to drive it into shed, it gave a big jerk and ground the gear loudly.

Have no idea what this means on a FI bike, or how to adjust it. I've never used the choke, and after moving it to the shed today I shut it down, pulled choke out and shoved it back in....then restarted. Still high idle.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Thanks

You have cold start solenoids on the right hand side that looks like the air cleaner cover. With the cold weather that we have been having that's all right. Probably staying on longer keeping the idle up until the bike warms up. If it doesn't come down there's an adjustment on the right on the same side on the right hand side that you can turn down....its a cable with a black knob at the end

Exactly what Rasta has mentioned . I own a 2001 FI also . Before I installed my BAK my bike would idle fast during the fall . After I removed the cold air solenoids I used the "choke" until it warmed up then pushed it in . All is good !!

Before the bak it usually took 2 or 3 min for the idle to go down on a cold start . Which felt like forever . If the idle doesn't go down you could like Rasta mentioned turn the idle down by turning the idle knob counter clockwise .

What they said....The FI Bikes don't have a choke. Its labeled a choke, but its a idle up knob.
theres a adjustment on the rear facing side, behind the backing plate. Idle up and down problems are usually associated with the butterfly adjustment over on the side.
Probably needs to be cleaned.
Adjust the throttle lower while your burp the throttle really fast while engine is running. Idle should drop......
Also, need to put on coasters, disable all the smog shit, pull off all that crap and plug it all off, you'll be suprised how much better your bike will run.....

Thanks for all the comments. I found the knob on the right side....but what's the knob above the ignition on the left side. That's what I was told is the choke.

Thanks

The knob on the left is the " choke " basically a fast idle knob . You pull it on cold days and push it back in once the bike has warmed up . The knob on the right just under the dish sets your idle . I would take the bike out for a good ride and get her warmed up , then set it to it's proper idle . These bikes don't have a tach so you'll have to just play it by ear . These bike's idle somewhat higher than usual ( not a hd ) Should be around 950 .

Before you set the idle I would get some sea foam or throttle body cleaner and clean your throttle bodies really well . Use a toothbrush and get those butterflies really clean . Dirty throttle bodies can also affect the idle as well .

Kawasaki's DO NOT have chokes.

They have an 'enricher' knob that just bumps the rpm's up.

And for you carb guys, the Keihin's don't have real chokes either.

The 'choke' or enricher just opens another circuit in the carb to allow more fuel through to up the rpm's.

Good idea to clean those throttle plates but cleaning them is going to get the RPMs even higher so the idle still needs to be turned down

Well, under ideal circumstances with my bike, I check my oil level, then I pull out the so called 'choke', start the bike. Since my bike engine is heavily modified, it will usually die once. I'm running the MegaCams 415-X1s.... I start her again, have her rev'd slightly, I count to 10, then I let her idle on her own.
After several minutes, she will start to smooth out, and her idle will increase slightly. I'll almost have my riding gloves, jacket, facemask on, I push her know in, and she idles on her own.
I have my idle set at 950/975, but my bike has a really lopey idle.
If she ever fails to idle, I clean my throttle body, and my idle comes back....

When my idle gets funky I clean the throttle body.

Can you clean the plates on the throttle body with seafoam spray? What else would you recommend?
