Plastic oil pump gear failure

Hi All,
This is my first post here.
I recently was given a 98 VN1500 which had been sitting for about 6 years due to oil pump failure caused by the teeth stripping off the plastic drive gear. I ordered a metal gear which should be here this coming Saturday.
After searching this forum and the web for repair techniques with out splitting the case, I decided trying the one that involves drilling a large hole above and to the right of the plastic gear shaft.
I can see the circlip, using an inspection mirror, but after 2 hours of fiddling, have not been able to get it off the shaft.
If I pull out on the plastic gear hard enough will it pop off?
Any other Ideas.
The photos and instruction for getting the cerclip on the new gear shaft were well explained, but did not mention anything about getting the clip off the old shaft..

Thumbs Up

I too read the thread that you are trying to remove the OEM pog and Shaft. I believe this guy that posted the thread lives in Austin.

But my main question to you is that if the last owner was riding and continued to ride with the POG ? internal damage may have taken place.

The inexpensive fix would be do what we did. Just see if you can check my post of the how's.

My suggestion would be only doing the gear fix first then ride the bike.

My mfg date is 98 but bike is classified as a 99.

If you get back on the VBF post up some pictures.

Heres what I find funny.....its only the Nomads that are stripping out, loosing pressure. T1500 Classic has no problem. A bunch of us are mechanics and have yet to figure out why its just the Nomads and why.....A special plastic gear, bad teeth, ??????
Anyway, the 1500 classic seemed to have the same thing with no problems....and the BUBF's.....
Just 1999 to 2000s....theres none shown up from 98.....just 99 to 2000

I found the trick to getting the snap ring off the shaft was to completely remove the plastic gear. This allowed the shaft to slide further toward the oil pump, where I could see the clip through the hole I drilled and work it off the shaft.
I was able to get the new SOG installed. Now after cranking the engine for a couple seconds, the oil light go's off.
I'm still a long way from getting this thing running.
No spark. Carburetor slides froze shut. Throttle cable broke. Dry rotted, cracked tires. Probably much more.
Setting out doors for 6 years, untouched and unloved has taken its toll.
My goal is to just get it running with the least expense possible, so I can decide if it will be worth it to completely fix it up and get it in road worthy condition.

Well, buy yourself a good deadblow hammer, large and small. Get yourself 2 cans of wd40 and 2 cans of pbBlaster. On Yea, a can/basket (1Gallon) of Carb cleaner.
Start slow, cleaning everything, taking things off, checking them out. Get yourself a good repair manual, take your time....
