Unfortunately, it's getting to be the same up here. We haven't had a good rain in a month or more. The grass is turning a beautiful shade of brown.

The bike is missing the "all-valuable" tank-badge and a few other chrome pieces that make it worth more...

Also, no mention of the restoration process (of which it clearly has had); or whether its frame, engine and trans all match via serial number... also important to know.

Given the asking price... I would think it is a mix-match of parts.

Might be good for someone that just has to have a flat-head though.

You guys might enjoy this:

I think the guy is nuts starting them up. They haven't run in decades and whoever buys them will put them in a museum and if they want to ride it, the bike should be "gone through" before running the engine. The auction totaled 3.9 million for 1580 lots.

I wouldn't worry about Dale starting an old bike. He wouldn't do it if there would be trouble. He is one of the world's renowned experts at old motorcycles. He has his own extensive museum in Maggie Valley -- where all the bikes are in working order and on display.

The barn where this collection was found is not too far from where I live. Quite a few people knew this guy had quite a collection, but most did not know how extensive.

I guess. Those bikes were smoking like two strokes, worse in fact. My only guess is that a bike that supposed runs fetches more than one that doesn't.

Let's put it this way: If I found a 1970 442 W-30 that had been sitting for 40 years, I wouldn't try to start it. There's too much to go through to make it right where it won't be right from sitting so long.

What you are assuming is that they simply walked up to it and kicked it to start it.

More than likely (from watching endless videos by Dale) they took the plugs out and heavily fogged the cylinders; oiled what needed oiling, checked the fuel tank for contaminants; checked the plugs, checked to see that the engine and tranny was spinning-free; and checked for anything else that might fly-off or apart if it started (don't want to put an eye out).

Fogging the cylinders would account for the smoke you saw.

If you would ever care to check Dale's museum out, he has a great website about it; with endless videos of him and others working and restoring the bikes.
