Fuel manager?

I just purchased a 2000 1500 Nomad with V&H pipes.
I don't see a fuel manager installed, must it have 1 for the pipes? Bike runs great no back firing. I am planning on opening up the intake and know a management system will be required. Any quick way to check if one's already there? I looked under the seat and didn't see anything...

If you dont see one, or a wire connection for one, there is not one.

These bike come from the factory running dangerously lean, some worse than others. The way to see if you need a fuel processor is start up a hill holding a steady speed @ about 2000 rpms, and then open the throttle wide open and hold it for a bit. If it starts sounding like marbles rattling around off the top of the pistons, then you do need a fuel processor. This effect (pinging) is worse in the summer.
Most folks put their fuel processor in the left side cover, check there to see if you have one, then look at the plugs that attach to the top of each injector, if it has a double plug on each, then you may have a processor. My processor (TFI) is inside my left side cover, and I hard wired it at the ECU connection, so mine is not piggy-backed on top of the injectors like a plug-n-play unit is.

If it runs great, decent fuel mileage, and no pinging under most conditions, you don't need one.

Is it carbureted or fuel-injected?

Fuel injected (thanks for all the feedback)
I'll dig around and see if one's there.
I'm planning on doing an intake mod and just don't want to buy if i don't need it.

I've read good things about the "bully" and they're on sale for 245 each.
Any opinions if i have to pull the trigger?

Bill

It's a Dobeck EJK Gen 3, just has a weisco label on it. That is a good price though. I have the Dobeck EJK version, works great and very easy to adjust. Buy it! you'll like it.

you will need the fuel programmer if you open the intake up.

i debaffled mine and gutted the goat bladder. didnt really seem to run any leaner, but when i installed the tfi, the bike really woke up. i cant wait to open the intake up

Welcome to the forum, Bill. The rule of thumb is a fuel manager isn't necessary with aftermarket exhaust only but after marker exhaust is a must if a fuel manager and/or intake system is installed. Gotta open up those pipes to let the additional gases be expelled.
You won't regret buying a Fuel Proccesor. The performance boost is worth the few MPG lost, if any.

Here's an interesting development; My '04 VN1500 has been shade-tree modd'ed with extra ohms in the temp sensor wire and debaffed and drilled pipes. It ran pretty great, and when I did the Cadmman air box mod I took out the resistor in the temp wire since the Cadmann mod does allow for cooler air into the box. Now it ran even better, except for one small annoyance, a bit of vibration in the left floorboard. Not too much, but it was there. I was looking for loose bolts (and as an added benny, took out the buzzy vibration in the front, caused by two loose wire clamps) but the floorboard buzz was still there. Then on sunday, during a short ride, i'd stopped for a bit of a stretch, and when I headed out again, I was amazed at how great it ran! The vibe was gone, and the throttle response was even better, and the engine was quieter, too, tho that may have been that I shoved those ear plugs in even further than usual, but the vibe in the floorboard was gone. I wonder how long it will last-
