Needing Advice on HotRod Black Paint.....

OK, while some say I'm outstanding in the field, being a mechanic, {out by the back road} , I don't know diddly about paint. Just enough to get myself into severe trouble.
I know Eastwood has a Hotrod Black Kit, suppossed to come with everything. I inhereted a friends DeVilbiss paint guns (set of 2 in a big case with all kinds of goodies included), good quailty. He bought himself some new ones....my paint is beginning to get brittle and flake, so I'm gonna be needing a paint job soon.
Sooooooo, after my move, I'm gonna be teaching myself to do a basic 1 color paint job on my tins.
I'm looking for pointers, suggestions, do's/don'ts, all other manner of info. I also thought about a pearl purple....that will be alot harder, correct?
If it is, I want durable, clean satin black....
