Engine Whine

Been member for awhile and this is my first thread. I leave for Pigon Forge Friday. Today while going to work I notice a engine whine while travelling. I could pull in the clutch and the whine stopped. Let it back out and it started again. Do not have the whine while still. should ahve stated 2003 with 16000 miles.

It's probably whining because it wants to be ridden more!

Kind of hard to diagnose something like this online. It could be the clutch, the driveline u-joint, lots of things.

I know it needs to be driven more. Work alot and sent time on active duty. Correct me if I am wrong but when travelling and I pull in the clutch the drive shaft and rear end continue to turn

Yes, they will turn as long as you're moving.

Check the gear oil. I am not saying that it is low or worn out, but that hypod gears will whine if the oil is too low. This is step 2 really, as step 1 is to raise the bike and duplicate the problem, and use a stethescope to ID the source.

I would check for this on both sides of the engine case and pay attention to the bevel gear bearing at the last engine case place there before the drive shaft. The bevel gear and it's bearing run on engine oil.

Like Cj says it could be something else too.

Hope it turns out to be a minor thing. Be sure and check the oil level in the rear end as Mac said. Although I would think the rear end would make noise as long as the bike is rolling whether the clutch lever is engaged or not. Just a thought. Sounds like something to do with the clutch, maybe.

What kind of tires are you running. This will sound strange but I had the OEM Bridgestones on and was experiencing a whine as well. It turned out that the tires were cupping, after only 1000 miles (I was told that was common for them) and it made the tread pattern create a whine. I installed a set of Metzelers and the whine was gone.

gear oil or not changes the lash in the gears. When there is power applied to the gears they will whine like a old chevy truck slowing down. Clutching IN allows them to coast and will quit the whine. Again I don't know what is wrong. So far as i can think, a too low oil is the easiest fix.

There is a lot of other things, just that ight be wrong with the gear box alone, but no sence in diagnostics with out futher info.

The dreaded Brickstones while like french whores.. But they will whine whether or not the clutch is pulled in. I hate those tires with predjudice. An opinion.

Still am not sure about the whine. may be in the u joint. Has a little play there, friends have looked and stated it was not enough to whine. Oil is find and has been changed often. I am going to go ahead and change the u joint and go ahead and service swingarm. Figured I would also put in ms clutch spring. Sent email to judge for washers, he has not replied.

You should check to make sure its not the bevel gear bearing as well, another member here is in the process of replacing his at the moment. It makes a whine also when the bearing goes bad.
When your changing the U joint its not that much more to check the bearing.
Judge is normally slow to respond to emails, I guess youll have to try and be patient.
