Lowers

It looks like I won't put a fairing on the bike for another year or so (due to funds). The helmet buffeting is already driving me crazy so I need to add larger lowers. I have an aftermarket lightbar. I don't like the looks of the very wide (and oddly shaped for the crashbars) lowers. Seems like I've seen one version where the lowers were just longer (as opposed to wider, although they may have been slightly wider).

Anyone know which ones I'm referring to? Any first hand suggestions on decent lowers?

Ive seen the ones your speaking of but can't remember were to get them. Possibly Edmunds?
You can always make your own from a piece of lexan or plexiglas, Use a piece of 1/4" plywood to make the templates and make sure they work before you cut them out of the plastic.

I have a set of larger Edmond lowers that I'll sell for $30 shipped. They were $55 new. http://edmondslowers.homestead.com/Order.html

Check with Joe (Chucksters) he makes several different lowers for different combinations. Something else that I found is that the crash bar chaps help some too.

Jared

I sent a PM but i don't trust my skills with a computer. I'd be interested in the lowers but I don't know if they'd fit my 2010 nomad.

I looked on the edmonds website and didn't find a fitment chart. Any thoughts o whether the'd fit.

Thanks

John

Ringydingy -- I don't own a bandsaw (or even a jigsaw) so making my own probably wouldn't work. I'm "frugal" so I'd rather do it that way if I could just to save a buck but I don't think trying to cut all that with a pocket knife would work out well. :)

The ones I was thinking of weren't Edmonds or Chucksters (although both of them will be getting some of my business this winter). Both of those are wider with cutouts for the crash bars. The ones I'm thinking of were taller (top to bottom) but not wide enough to need the cut outs. On the other hand, if Edmonds/Chucksters is what's recommended, that's probably what I'll end up with.

The buffeting seems to be worse when the windshield is raised all the way (which is where I need it). Is it safe to assume that with either the Edmonds or Chucksters lowers, I can raise the windshield and still eliminate the buffeting? Is it possible to tint the lowers?

Jared -- I have a Cobra light bar and it looks like I can only use the smaller ones from Edmonds. If yours will fit (and aldridgekennedy doesn't want them), I might be interested.

You started the thread and deserve first dibbs on the lowers if you want them. I don't want to snake them away from you.

I'm guessing Utah's lowers may come closer to fitting your '07 better than my '10.

Your call.

A long time ago someone posted a pattern for homeade lowers, but if you can't cut them out it doesn't really do much good.

Don't get me wrong. If I had a way to make them, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'm all for donating money to our wonderful vendors (especially ones who contribute to the Vulcan or here) but saving a buck is saving a buck.

I used a coping saw to cut a pair out of lexan. It takes longer but works great. I then got a pair of Chucksters and had to modify them a little to fit with the Cobra light bar. Coping saw to the rescue!

What *really* fixed the biffeting for me was a set of lowers from JTD that go on the crash bar. Way more expensive than the fork lowers but way more effective.

Eventually, I'll have a set of hard lowers (JTD or otherwise). They're just not in the budget this year unless someone donates them. :)

Question

http://kawanow.proboards.com/index.c...y&thread=16758

I started the above thread on the old forum about the lowers I made.
The first frame has a picture of the trial version cut out of plywood.
I made the final version out of plexiglass.
It made a huge difference for me.

Attached is a .pdf file that you can print to make your own.

I tried to attach a file with the following instruction embedded, but it was then too large, therefore to print the attached file:
- In Adobe Reader, click File - Print
- Set the Page Scaling = None
- Under Properties set print to Landscape (not portrait)
- Print it.
- Once printed, match up the X on the two pages.

The finished template should be 18.5 inches at its longest point.

I have the Edmonds lowers...and they alone helped with buffeting. What eliminated it completely was the addition of an AirLite engine guard chap. The combination of those two things really changed the airflow to completely eliminate any buffeting....

Eventually, I'll end up with an HD fairing and hard lowers so that should eliminate the buffeting completely. For now, I'm hoping the Edmonds lowers will reduce it enough to get me by. Maybe I'll feel comfortable with some longer distances with them.
