Annapolis Maryland

My wife and I are headed to the boat show in Annapolis in early October. sailboats are one of my other passions, but unfortunately this trip will be by car.
We would appreciate some advice from anyone familiar with the area.
Given that all the Hotels right in the down town area are booked and too expensive anyway, we are looking to stay a few miles away. Is there any neighborhoods that we should stay clear of when looking at booking a motel?
