Fuel pump

If the fuel pump on your 1600 Nomad fails and you don't have warranty coverage, a new pump runs $400-$500 from a dealer. They are sealed units and have no serviceable components.

However, there is an alternative. The fuel pump used in the 1600 Nomad is made by Mitsubishi, and it is the same pump used in the 1989 Mitsubishi Galant. I just checked Autozone, and the pump runs less than $135. You can also purchase the pickup screen and filter to go with it.

Autozone PN # E8023

Warning: As of now, this is all hypothetical information. I have not personally validated this information because I have not replaced my fuel pump. If someone attempts this replacement, please post your results, positive or negative.
NOTE; Another fuel pump to try is PN # E8455 which better matches the Vulcan part. Perhaps Kawasaki used more than one pump on the bikes, in different model years. Make sure you take your old pump with you when your comparing, so you get the correct pump.

Fuel pump - Mitsubishi

More info from Ossienomad
Today I pulled the fuel pump from my 2008 1600 vulcan nomad to try and do something about the screaming. My bike has 70000 kilometers on it and this is the second pump its gone through. In Australia Kawasaki are asking $800.00 for this part. In US around $400.00. I dismantled and cleaned the filter part of pump as suggested by members in my previous thread. The result was excellent, no more screaming.

While in there i discovered the following things re this fuel pump.
- The base of the unit is labled as Kawasaki 49040-0008 It is then marked UCT3OKU9 then 8903 The part is also stamped with a mitsubishi diamond. This lableing is on the base of the complete unit on the lower external sump.

Once you get inside the actual pump is clearly labled mitsubishi UC T30 followed by the numbers 08212.

The plastic bowl section of the pump is stamped with the numbers 0808181

It appears the actual pump is indeed mitsubishi and can be purchased in australia for $100.00. What also seems clear is that it is not the pump that fails, (ever heard of mitsubishi fuel pumps failing in 30000 kilometers?.) its the plastic housing surrounding it. It simply collects gunk which restricts the flow of fuel causing the pump to work too hard and so it squeels. Alternatively there is a pressure valve on the pump which may also cause the sqeeling as it squirts by passed fuel back into the tank. Either way it's the plastic part that fails.

The fact that the pump stops squeeling once the reserviour has been cleaned demonstrates that its not the pump that fails unless you let it go too long.

I'm going to chase up a few pumps of the type mentioned above and see if they come as a complete assembly from mitsubishi. If so I'll let you know.

Airtex fuel pump

These fuel pumps mentioned are Airtex fuel pumps and the company cooperate office is as follows:

Airtex Products, LP
407 West Main Street
Fairfield, IL 62837

Here is a little response I wrote on another thread:

If not I will have no choice, but to order the ones from the dealer at 650 bucks.

This my writ-up:

The E8455 would be the style of connector that would be used on the 1600's( plug style) and E8023 style is for the 1500's(terminal style). However, ever though the pumps look alike the sizes are different too. I had to get the E2111 for my 1500, that I carry with me for emergency. I had bought it a couple years ago when I was having fuel problems. I did make a couple of adjustments to make it work and it did but since the fuel pump was not the problem I put the oem one back on and carry this one with me for spare.

The first picture shows the similarity of the pumps but the size is much different
The second picture shows the oem on the left and the E211 on the right.

Third picture shows the fuel inlet of the oem pump and the E2111 pump.

The forth picture is the rubber gasket that goes on the inlet side of the pump. The oem is on the left and the one on the right is the one from the larger pump that is in the first picture. This will give you an idea how much bigger that pump is compared to the oem one.

The outer diameter of E2111 is about an inch a half and so if the one you have is much more than that then you might have the wrong one.....I hope it is not.

PS I have not seen a 1600 fuel pump apart from knowing from other people that the connections are different from the 1500's. So I am writing this taking their word for it. So I am assuming other than that, size wise they might be close in size.
