2003 FI or CARB?

Hello everyone, I've been laying low for a while still trying to find the right bike for me. I have found a 2003 Burgandy/Beige, with 43,000 on it, V&N, HyperCharger and you guys tell me.... it has a choke. The sales man says it has a fuel pump with a throttle body, does that mean its carberated instead of FI? The price is good for all those miles, but not having FI defeats the purpose.

I will be retiring next year and it would be wonderful to celebrate in Custer will all of you.... if I can find the bike I want.

2003 FI or CARB?

Well, I just called a local dealer and they say it should be FI. But another issue for me, he tells me to get it back stock air cleaner, requires a lot of duct work and cost about $350.00 in parts alone. So, I quess I'll keep looking. I truly want a stock bike. I have a custom Harley setting in the garage that shakes my teeth out and makes me go numb to ride it now....

Even my 2007 fuel-injected Nomad has a choke knob. I was surprised too, the first time I saw it. I think it's more of a fast-idle adjustment than a true choke, but you can't tell if a Nomad is carbed or has FI by the presence of a choke knob.

Just so you know I don't think you really have a choke knob. It is a fast idle knob.

And Skeeter you have a FI if it's a 2003

And I guarantee the Nomad won't shake your teeth out

I have learned a valuable lesson. If you want information about a product, don't ask the sales person.... Plus this dealer is not a Kawasaki dealer. So, the sales person Dave , didn't know much about the bike. Thank ya'll so much for the info. I have read all the pages here and it threw me for a loop about the idle knob plus the sales person said it had a carb not FI. I tried to correct him, cause I know more than he does, since I'm a member of KawaNow.org and can read.. So, I guess I'll pass on this one too. It needs a few things changed back to stock for me to love it, and that would cost some bucks. But I love that red and beige , it sure is purdy!!

Fuel Injected will have the indicator ( Fi) on the gauge assembly.

2003 FI or CARB?

Hey Karen in Nashville! This is Mike in Nashville. lol

When I was looking for my Nomad, I looked at the FI vs. Carb question. It appears that Kawasaki switched from Carb to FI sometime in 2002. There were both in 2002 and only FI after that. At least that is what I read somewhere on the WWW.

If it is a 2003 and nobody changed it, should be FI. They all have the choke as well.

Where in Nashville is it? I looked for a long time and ended up getting mine in Orlando, FL of all places. Flew down in June, rode back over two days with a temp tag and a change of clothes. Loved it!

Actually carbs ran up til and including 2004 with some fuel injected as well. 2005 and up are fuel injected only. :)

Great, now I got to find that website and tell them they were wrong. lol

Here is something from another website:
Fuel injection for Kawasaki's second-generation liquid-cooled V-twin was first introduced on the 1500 Drifter in 1999 and involved new cam timing and compression increase, very befitting for this otherwise sedate V-twin. A more evolved system released on the Nomad in 2000 (and later that year on the Classic FI) features a refined 16-bit processor and upgraded mapping.

What would be the benefit of having the carb over the FI? I would suppose that the FI would get better gas mileage? I noticed some on here complain about low mileage, and I now wonder if they may have carbs instead of FI.

Mine definitely says FI on the guage assembly.

2003 FI or CARB?

Thanks guys, I knew that I could get all my questions answered by posting here.

Hey Mike in Nashville, the scooter is in Union City, apparently the sales person doesn't know his bikes. I passed on an ebay bike that was in Goodlettsville and know I totally am kicking myself for not bidding on it. This bike has mods done that I do not want on a bike, so again I'll pass on this one even though its only $6000. Oh, did you get the maroon/beige 03 that was in the Tampa area?

Someone from here told me to check with a dealer in Irving Tx. He was still selling 07's from the box in black for $9499. Now in the past two weeks that I looked at his site, the price has gone up $400, plus the assembly fee for OTD/OFS.

Hey All... I want this bike so much to make the trip to Custer for my retirement. Myold Harley would beat me to death. So, on I go looking for the perfect 02, 03, or maybe an 04, don't want to spend all the money for a new one.

Is that a fact? I thought Carbs were gone by 2001. You may very well be right... but it's news to me!!

Run this by BD in the garage.....
