Has anyone removed the cat. converter from the 1600 Nomad ?

YES I have and was glad to be rid of that goats bladder. In fact removed all the stock pipes too and got V&H. I do think it helps to get off that extra weight, and MUCH better sounding. :-)

As Doc (lonewolf) did I also removed the stock exhaust. I chose to replace it with a set of COBRA'S true duels. Love them and they do sound good. Not too loud, just loud enough (will not whiz off the neighbors). Can't really say it runs any better, you have to change the air intake side of the equation to get that. Don't forget, you do not have to put a fuel processor on unless you change the air side too. The shops like to make you think it's necessary.

I beleive there is an article on gadgets sight about a bypass pipe that WAS available at one time, perhaps a muffler shop could bend one up for you. Id prefer aftermarket pipes myself though.

Aftermarket pipes don't connect via the goat bladder?

I gutted the goat belly and ran it like that for a few months and then I installed a set of V&H baggers, cleans up the bike and got rid of some weight.

No, the goat bladder gets removed completely. All aftermarket pipes are replaced from the exhaust port, right back.

i have the cobra tru dauls with the fi2000.i'm sure it will run okay
with the stock ecu but the fi controller does allow you to fine tune
to your bike and set up.for one thing richness/leanness is
influenced by the altitude where you ride.most of my riding
ranges between 4,500 and 9,000 feet elevation which will cause
a bike to run much leaner then a bike ridden at sea level.

I've run both and in the end the real difference is in the cost. I've had V&N pipes with Kury Air, and Power Commander on a VN1600. Cost somewhere around $1,000.

Now I'm running this on my Nomad VN1600

Silencers removed ($25.00)
Punched baffles ($0)
1K resistor mod ($.99)
Gutted Goat ($100.00)

Difference about $800-$900. Performance about the same. Weight difference? Maybe 5 lbs?

Do what you want and can afford. My asphalt eat'n Nomad with $125 exhaust and air system will run with any setup out here.
