GPS question

I have a Zumo 550, it is messing up and Garmin tells me it is no longer warrantied by them and not repaired by them as it is discontinued. They did say they would give me a 20% discount on any of the current units I could buy. I don't care for any of their current units or there Basecamp mapping software. So I sent it out to get it looked at by a different repair place.
There are other branded Zumo 550's such as the RoadTech/Harley or the Motorrad/BMW. They look to be the same unit just different names.
On the phone with Garmin I was told they no longer have parts for the Garmin Zumo 550. They do still fix the Motorrad but stopped fixing the RoadTech in August
With all that being said, my question is, do any of you have any experience with the Motorrad or Road Tech units. Are they actually the same units with different branding, does one work better than the other.
I really want to stay with the Zumo 550 as I am familiar with it and its mapping software.

When I bought my Harley I bought the Zumo 660. I believe it was right after that when the "Harley" version came out. From what I rmember reading on Zumo Forum, which is a great forum for info and may be a better place to find this info out, the only difference was the Harley version had all they dealers in it along with the H.D. logo on the outside. I would bet the 550 is the same.

You ought to ask Petenomad, he works for the company.

Not trying to hijack this thread but....

I did not like the change over to Base Camp either but I spent the time to learn it and now like it much better than the old program.

One great option I have found is that after mapping in Base Camp I can select the option to view the complete route in Google Earth. This is great for the forestry service back roads I take as I can zoom in and see if the road is paved all the way through.

I agree. Base Camp took a bit of getting use to but now I find it quick and easy to make routes.

Great links, especially the second one.

I am also a bit familiar with Basecamp and can use it for most all of my needs.

I do work for Garmin. If I knew anything specific, I would not be able to speak about it publicly due to confidentiality agreements.

I did answer Tim before I found this thread. Just so no one is left wondering, I will repeat what I sent him.

As a general rule, when a company agrees to private label a unit for an OEM, they negotiate terms. Often some of those terms require support for a certain period of time. In order to support that obligation, the company may also be required to hold a reserve of replacement parts. If that is the case and there are no other parts available it would not be possible to repair a non-OEM unit.

Again, I have no specific knowledge of these particular contracts and will not seek out this information since I would not be able to share it.

Can you tell me who that is. I have a Garmin 755T and the 3.5 mm jack for the headphones is messed up. Garmin does not work on this unit anymore and I would like to have it fixed.

I never could make Basecamp work for me... So I use TYRE. The free version has more than enough features to keep all but the pickiest users happy. It's a program designed by riders for riders, and easily moves routes from the computer to either your Garmin or Tom Tom device.

Tim, I did a search looking for refurbished units, and while they may be out there, there is also a number of second hand units on eBay. May be less hassle and just as cheap to buy another.

I never went with the Zumo. I never liked the look or feel.
I bought a wide 764 Garmin and it has worked for 7 years with no problem.
I go the updates every 6 months.
