My baby got scratched

No, not the bike. It's my other baby, my brand new truck.

I park in a large public parking lot when I go to the office. I left work today and was greeted a by nice 6 inch scratch right in the middle of the driver's side door of my 3-week old truck.

The Buick parked right next to my truck is the prime suspect but I have no proof.

There are things I would like to do to the a$$hole responsible for this...

Here is the photo of the damage:

The scratch appears smooth for the most part so it is probably just the clear coat that got roughed up. There are a couple of spots where I can feel it under my finger nails but the fingers go right over those spots so this appears to be just a surface scratch.

My question is...

Is this something that can be fixed with just some rubbing compound or am I looking at wet sanding first and then the rubbing compound followed by some polish?

that looks as though it will buff out no problem
3m makes a good 12 step process which can get expensive when I painted my scoot the sales man at the paint counter sold me # 2 and #9 in this series of bottles that are paid for individually that's where the money part comes in for all the bottles in this series dribble a couple of drops of water on the truck and start with this #2 bottle and you will be amazed with some buffing action followed by # 9 spot will disappear
( low rpms on a buffer is recommended)

This kind of thing reallly chaps my hide. I usually park my truck in tthe outer reaches of a parking lot so it doesn't get packed in like sardines in a can. Invariably I come out to find something like a bondoed and primered 1978 El Camino with its bed full of Tecate cans parked 12" from me with dozens of empty spaces in the vicinity.

Sorry to see that Martin. Does the garage have cameras?

I would take that to a local body shop and ask them to buff it out.

Last week I got my car out of the shop. Some idiot with a plow cut my front bumper cover in half and took off at a Lowe's parking lot. It doesn't matter what kind of vehicle you have or where you park someone will always find a way to put a dent or scratch in it.

I know the truck is probably showing up as pink in the picture but what color is it?

Neil, sorry to hear about your car. It is true that every car parked in a public place eventually gets dinged and scratched. It's just way too soon for me.

The truck is actually dark red. It came out pink in the photo due to low light and no flash. Using a blue pad to block the background didn't help either.

I will try to stop by a body shop tomorrow after work and find out what it will take to get this fixed.

Maguiars Ultimate Compound is great. It is clear coat safe too. If that does not work, you may need to wet sand gently with 2000 grit and then buff with a good polish to bring back the gloss.

A shop is gonna give it to you in the poop chute. That looks like an eas DIY job. I have done it many times.

I did purchase Maguiar's Ultimate Compound along with their polish from Amazon last night. I figured if the body shop gives me a ridiculous price I will give the compound a try and take it from there.

Same thing happened to me. I had a 1980 Chevy pickup that I had just had all the body work done and a new paint job. The first time I took it to town we went to Wendy's and I parked where I thought it would be safe. 5 min. later I looked out and a car was parked next to it. They left before we did and you can guess the rest. About a 1 in. and a half chip by the door. I was pissed to say the very least!
