Something isn’t right with the starter clutch.
Go to the microfiche www.ronayers.com, or any of them, and check the parts diagram.

Ok, I fixed that, got it back in place. When I pressed the starter, I hear everything engaging and spinning up, but my starter relay started smoking and overheating. Thoughts?

Either too much load is being applied to system,(something binding or being too tight), or, not enough juice (amps) to turn motor over cleanly. Make sure elect. connectors are good, clean, and tight.
Loose, corroded terminals turn amperage into heat, which can melt down a wiring harness in the blink of a eye.... Also, a dead short...

Jump the starter with a lead direct from the battery to the pole on the starter.
Does the starter spins?

I guess its time to abandon this project and bring it in to a pro. I bought a new starter relay, and now all i'm getting is sparks out of the connectors to the starter relay and it's overheating again. I'm out of ideas. Anybody want a screwed up 2003 vulcan nomad?
