Newbie comments on Nomad

I've been driving an ST1100 but have hip issues, where my hip locks up. (I'm 54 and have some arthritis). So since my intent in 2009 is to drive from RI to Utah, Montana and a few other states next year, I decided I need something with floor boards. I saw a Nomad at my local dealer dealer and fell in love with the riding position and without even test driving one starting investigating the Nomad. Everything I read was positive and I puchased a 2007 leftover from Ohio for $10.000 and had it shipped to RI fro about $500. After arrival I was tortured for awhile by not being able to ride because of a shoulder surgery in the beggining of Feb, but couldn't take it any longer and jumped on it about 3 weeks ago and since have put about 2000 miles on it. My longest trip was last week and of the 474 miles I put on it that day, about 410 miles was two lane roads. I have never been so happy with any of the motorcycles I've owned. I've added Kuryakyn highway pegs and the 2 /12 in risers that chuckster sells, along with a Kuryakyn piece of luggage that has a lumbar support when strapped to the passenger seat. I tell you that I could have put more miles on that day with that setup. The combination of the risers, highway pegs and tour pack gave me the feeling of being in an easy chair along with the thrill of the ride. I've ordered a Baron's tach which will take care of what I want to buy this year. The Nomad is fantastic and let me tell you I couldn't have made a better decision.

This site is great. Extremely helpful. I'm glad I am a member.

Congrats, Flavor.

Nomads do have their warts, but they are basically really well made and well designed for the long open highway. The issues thay commonly do have are minor and well known. This is a bike that's not likely to leave you stranded.

Right off the bat, though, find all 8 hose clamps and tighten them. This is something that always needs to be done on a new Nomad. (5 of those clamps are under the tank and hard to see. On my bike I can tighten them with a 15" long screwdriver, if I pull off the left side air filter assembly.)

Also locate the radiator drain plug and tighten it a bit. They are usually quite loose from the factory.

Welcome Flavor, your report carries more weight coming from somebody that is used to a long distance tourer like the ST. Glad you are enjoying the bike.

Flavor-
Congrats on the new bike. I've only owned my Nomad for a week, but I use the same words you do when describing the ride to friends: it feels like I'm sitting in an easy chair while cruising down the road. I'm 6'2", and I don't think I'll need to put risers on, as it the handlebars feel very natural where they are. I put on 170 miles today, and my hands didn't get cramped at all. We have a lot of wind here in North Dakota, and I've been really impressed with the way the Nomad just laughs at it, no matter if I'm riding into it or if it's hitting me from the side.
Ride safely!

Welcome fron NW Georgia. last summer I rode from home to Front Royal Virginia (about 575 miles), only stopped 3 times, and that was for gas. Got there and still felt like I could go another 300. The Nomad is a highway eating machine, and your going to love it.
