TFI and MPG

Hi All,

I ran the first tank of the season with the new TFI installed and got 16kms per litre, approx 38mpg.

This was at speeds a little above the speed limit, in the country.
The bike is running better than it ever has, no gasping or stumbling between 1st and 2nd anymore, no pinging and lots more throttle response. 05 Nomad, gutted mufflers, K&N replacing the stock. TFI settings 3-6-1-9.

I just got finished fitting the gutted goatbelly to go with the gutted mufflers. It sounds even more throatier than before and once I have ridden it I will report back with more. All I need now is the 9" K&N filter kit (on order) and I am done with modifications for the season.

Redjay you are running a stock air filter with these settings now?

And where will the k&n filter be? Right or Left side?

Hi Macmac. The only air filter I have on now is a K&N replacing the stocker. I have a 9" K&N filter kit on order and will be keeping the K&N (replacing the stocker) on also. I do not want to blank off the stock side as I want to revert back to all stock on day.

So the only air will always come from the left side huh? I think you should set all pots to off so far anti clockwise as is possible, and start with pot 1 alone, to get best rpm with the engine at full warm.

Once you go too far rich the engine will burble a bit and drop a beat in rpm, then turn the pot back to best rpm. Set idle air speed then. Oh yeah turn up the black know for more rpm first, once you are dialed in set it back for a proper idle.

Pot 2 will need to be done on the road doing as fast as you dare till you bounce off the rev limter, which shuts the engine down for a instant in time and is normal. The idea here is to go as fast as you can for about 1/4 miles over and over turning pot 2 clockwise untill you get overly rich and the engine gags on too much fuel. Then turn anti clockwise again to be at the best you can eke out...

If I were you I would set both pot 3 and 4 anti clockwise so far as you can and leave them there.

Your set up is breathing thru the p[lastic cross over tube only and so will still be resricted.

I think you should consider getting the next air filter on the right side anyway you can.

I am not familar with the K&N set up unless it is like the Caddman with an exposed filter, or has a cover air can pass thru.

Basicly everyone should do these steps over set to some book spec and call it good anyway.

All the engine while alike varry in breathing, and while all the moduals for fuel are also alike they must varry as well.

I am willing to bet money that if I tested 100 TFI units with a ohms meter that a very few would match any other unit.

Hi Macmac. The K&N filter kit I am waiting for is essentially the same as the Spectre kit. I could not find anyone locally that could order the Spectre kit but a large local chain (Canadian Tire) was able to get me the K&N kit. Seeing as I would have probably eventually have gone to a K&N filter with the Spectre kit anyway I just decided to ante up now, order the K&N kit, and be done with it.

redjay: if you put that K&N on the right side and block off the left you will get max hp gain, torque, etc.

Hi Doc. I do not want to block off the left side, I want to leave that side stock (except for the K&N replacing the stocker). Once I put the 9" on the right side the left side is doing nothing anyway.

As long as the left side is left completely stock (bowl and filter all intact) you are fine not blocking anything off on the left. The engine will draw it's air through the right side K&N giving you the performance boost. If the K&N gets dirty then the left side will still function, bringing air through the tunnel, but with a performance hit (just like stock).

I agree 100% with this statement, but find it hard to see the right side ever getting that dirty and still be on the bike...
