Heads up out there

Two fatal accidents, both Friday, both in the Town of Gilbert (which is right near where I live)

Gilbert motorcyclist killed in car collision

By D.S. Woodfill Arizona Republic-12 News Breaking News Team Sat Nov 24, 2012 3:30 PM

A 60-year-old motorcyclist was killed Friday night after a vehicle turned in front of him at a Gilbert intersection.
Gilbert police Lt. John Lyle said an 18-year-old motorist was traveling westbound on Warner Road when the motorist attempted to turn left onto Lindsay Road. The motorcyclist, who was traveling eastbound on Warner, struck the vehicle at about 8:45 p.m.
Gilbert Fire Department spokesman Mike Connor said the motorcyclist was unconscious and not breathing when paramedics transported him.
Lyle said the man was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Lyle said police are investigating the accident.

Female motorcyclist killed in Gilbert crash

The Arizona Republic-12 News Breaking News Team Mon Nov 19, 2012 2:16 PM

A Gilbert motorcyclist was fatally injured Friday after she collided with a motor vehicle operated by a 16-year-old girl.
Jenavieve Phillips, 28, died shortly after the unidentified driver of a Toyota 4-Runner turned south on Park Village Drive from Park Street into the path of the victim, Gilbert police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Sanger said.
Alcohol and drugs have been ruled out in the case, which Sanger said is under investigation by the department’s collision reconstruction team.

Why in the hell is a motorcycle so hard to see?

This happens way too often.

They are only hard to see when the driver isn't paying attention, Dave. I'm sure these young drivers have no problem reading a text message while driving.

that's exactly what's happening. I never go through intersections without my hand and foot covering the brakes trailing throttle. I've had it happen too many times!

If I see someone in a left-turn lane, I've gotten into the habit of flipping the hi-beam on about twenty yards out - something changed, hopefully they noticed. If they are creeping up, I lay on the air horn - and all the time foot and hand readied for an emergency stop. And if I see those tires already turned, I start braking until I KNOW they see me! I would rather be annoying and paranoid than splattered.

It really does come down to paying attention to your own situation...

Around here (and elsewhere) I see motorcyclists riding dangerously all the time... and I don't mean fast or anything.

More like... riding too close behind cars, riding down a street without consideration to the side-streets, and rolling through busy intersections in the wrong position for others to see them (while clearly not covering their brakes).

The list goes on and on... you guys have seen it too.

I truly believe if we could see actual films of some of these accidents we would find the motorcyclists partly to blame by having poor habits.

Having said that... riding is inherently dangerous though, especially with teenagers texting.

Be careful, some drivers might interpret your headlight flash as a sign that they can proceed and turn directly in front of you.

Visibility is very important, that's why I went with 50 watt driving lights mounted on the middle of the crash bar. It's different and gets attension, the wide low triangle of light (head light and two low driving lights) makes people look twice, IMHO.

I don't flash it, I leave it on high beam. After I clear the intersection, I'll drop it back to low.

Are you talking day time or night time? I was taught to ride with the high beam on 100% of the time in the daylight. To see the difference in visibility, have a buddy ride a ways back behind you with first the low beam for a while and then the high beam for a while. You will be surprised and it won't bother anybody in daylight.

Highbeam on all the time in daylight. I never flash it.
I will never use a modulator for the same reason.

I thought you couldn't remove the posts because you couldn't find the "DELEATE" button.
