So I'm researching this issue and look up the tool. I find a Kawasaki FDM from 2006. Seems they had/have the same issue on the VN2000. Why didn't they redesign it for the 1700 3 years later.

Also looks like the 57001-1672 may also work for this. Seems the 1572 is spec'ed for the 900 also. Someone couldn't find one and got a 1672 for cheap($40) and it fit and worked properly. Maybe a Kawasaki updated tool.

Quite a few belt drive Yamaha's use a similar rear drive pulley assembly that has a needle roller bearing that you cant lubricate without taking the assembly apart. This bearing fails and can seize on the rear axle which means the axle has to be cut to get the rear wheel out. At least 3 guys on the V Star forum have had this happen to them. I informed Yamaha corporate that this was a known issue and I never even received a response. I informed my local Yamaha dealer of the issue and they now advise every customer that the bearing needs to be inspected and greased at every tire change. They have found several bearings that needed to be replaced.

Yes, I came across this part # 57001-1672 too and wondered too. Visually comparing the size of bracket that accepts the handle to the circumference of the tool it appears similar/same to 57001-1572 and may work? I've ordered Jim's Sprocket tool however.

I would like to point out the additional handle is about $40 and brings the total to about $100 US. It's not worth saving $50 compared to $150 for Jim's Sprocket tool IMO and just want to change the washer and hopefully, be done.

I did get a $10 wedge to see if this would work for the one's who want to cheap out.

The Jim’s tool has a set screw to lock it to the sprocket (for Harley) but I found the tool works fine on Kawasaki without using the set screw.

So I pulled the front sprocket off last night - didn't need Jim's sprocket tool or an impact/long-bar cause the only thing holding it on was the bent tab washer. I could spin the nut off with one finger... My splines are okay and will have a spare replacement tab washer in tool box going forward.

You are very lucky you caught it before the spline was ruined.

So I put it back together! My bike had 50K miles (80K kms) and while I couldn't feel play in the pulley, the nut was finger tight only.
  • The $10 wedge tool would probably work but you would likely need a second set of hands to hold it in. While I had one I opted to use Jim's tool since I purchased it.
  • Jim's sprocket tool worked like a charm but check the plastic knob on the locking bolt before you leave the store - mine was smashed due to it coming in a bag (no box). I laid a small piece of thin wood on the belt where the tool rested on it.
  • You will need a large 12 point socket to remove the pulley nut and torque wrench that will do 130-foot lbs.
  • I also put the tab washer in the freezer as my thought is it won't compress as much. I will cut the old one and measure the inside where the nut sits to determine if it did.
  • The specs say to torque the inner cover bolts and clutch unit to 106-inch lbs (not foot lbs)
  • I cleaned up everything, inspected, took some pictures of splines to compare next time I change. I am not sure if they used moly grease as everything was dry and going from the tech service bulletin for Vulcan 2000 that was apparently the issue.

Inner cover and clutch slave cylinder bolts are torqued to 12 nm, or 106 in.lbs. Not ft.lbs.

knew something wasn't right... I need to wear my glasses more as my eyes are getting worse. I edited my previous post so others don't misread as I did.

Yes, you could order it at Fortnine but I sourced it locally for $209.
https://fortnine.ca/en/jims-sprocket-locker-2260

I just noticed their picture shows a thumb screw which is MUCH better than the bolt with plastic knob what was broken on mine.
