2019 Voyager OIL LEAK

Hey guys,

question for you all............got a brand new 2019 voyager with 1750 miles. ( I did my 600 mile service timely)................... I went away for 2 weeks for business, came back, fired up the bike, let it run 20 min, and shut it down. NEVER had any issues prior, but noticed the next morning, I had 3 dime size oil spots under the bike. I checked the oil, it was full, i didn't see any active dripping, even put some paper under it next night and not a spot on the paper.

anything to be concerned about???? I'm new to this mechanical portion of the program, so any feedback is appreciated.

Oil Full, not at the top end of full? Could it be coming from the air cleaner? Slightly over full could cause a leak there. I have read Oil was changed and only doing one of the 2 drain plugs, so the measured new oil installed caused an over fill. And that story was from the dealer doing the work. Did you run the bike to warm, then let it sit for 5 minutes then check the oil while the bike is level?

No oil was added since 600 mile service which was about 3 months ago. Never had a leak at all, until this 2 week hiatus from riding. I can’t check the bike at level. Live by myself, no lift etc so it’s always on side stand. Thanks for the reply. If it was overfull from the 600 mile service 3 months ago, wouldn’t it have leaked some then ? I’ve changed nothing at all other than didn’t ride it for 2 weeks. Dunno *♂️!

take it for a quick ride maybe 10 or 15 minutes and park it again in a different spot. put paper under it again and see if any drips again. it could just be some oil that was splashed under it from the last oil change. lay down beside it and look with a good flash lite.

I would check to be sure the shop tightened the drain plugs with more than their hand to start with. Plug could be loose.

Book also says put new washers on the drain pugs every oil change. Mine didn't have washers on it to begin with. It leaked a drop here and there. Added washers and all is good now.

As for checking the oil by yourself, I put a block of wood under the kickstand to hold the bike up 95% straight up to get it close to level. Best I can remember the instructions says to start the engine and let idle for 5 minutes, stop the engine, and let set for 5 minutes. Check the dip stick.

Made this out of a few scraps of wood for my 1500 classic and it works well on my Vaquero too. IMG_20190708_233322016.jpg

Are you sure it is not coolant, brake/clutch fluid, fork oil?

the leak was directly under where the oil dipstick is, so i figured it to be oil, looked like motor oil, smelled like motor oil. hasn't leaked in 3 days, not a drop.

the heat down here in southeast is BRUTALLY hot, is it possible, the plastic drain plugs swelled up when they sat dormant, and after i started it etc, maybe returned to normal size? hence small leak??????? throwing darts................

will check drainplugs for looseness etc............. THANK YOU !

The drain plugs are metal as is the washer, but the washer is aluminum so it will conform to the surface when tightened properly, which is why it is called a crush washer. Sitting for a few days or weeks should not cause this to happen.

As suggested, take another ride and put paper under the bike to see if it happens again. If it was just the air filter from over filling, residue from the oil change, etc., you probably won't see it again. If you do see it again, take it back to the dealer.

It's under warranty, right? If there is something wrong, or they did something wrong, they need to fix it.

Ok Guys - I'm gonna throw out another "Could Be" into this conversation. If I'm not mistaken there is an Oil Breather that ports into the Air Cleaners area that allows any errant oil to drip into the intake to be burnt up under normal circumstances. Let's say that when you changed your Oil and had NO LEVEL way to check it it ended up on the high side. When you were riding it all along the system worked like it was supposed to and burnt up the oil. Now you let it sit for 2 weeks and that whisker amount of oil that was being burnt off is allowed to form drops and gravity takes over. I would follow the Oil Checking routine in the video above and get a friend to help you level the bike and check it for sure. Then just watch it. Hope that helps.

Just a thought, I'm in no way anyone to go to advice on this things. However, I thought I was leaking oil and found that the oil I was seeing was from the K&N filter which was saturated. That oil was leaking from the filter cover. Wiped up the excess oil there and no more drips.

Ok gentlemen !

I got home fired up the beast for 5 min, got it up on block of wood so it was about 95 percent level, let it cool for 5 min. Checked oil. Was perfect. Not over full but right on the money. Looked under the bike all over for any drippings and nada. Let it sit with towels under it and so far NO oil.

MBarr sent me the oil change video and it did say if you blip the throttle, which I did, it can send to much oil into the oil filter and bc it’s a dry sump system, too much oil in the filter could have been the reason for the dime size drips maybe ????
Other than that, I’m stumped. 1700 miles on it. 1100 since the 600 mile oil change so hard to think it was oil from the 600 service since it was many miles ago.

What say you gentlemen of the tribunal ????
Thanks !!!!

Ride it and keep an eye on it. A few drops of oil is no big deal.
It may never do it again.
