Son moving to Austin
My DW just informed me that our oldest son is moving to Austin, TX some time this winter...always the last to know ???
Anyway, for any of the Texas members can you give me some information on the Austin area so that I can at least have some comfort in knowing he isn't getting into area that is bad (don't know where is moving yet). Thanks in advance. Ron

Doc (Lonewolf) lives in Austin. You might want to give him a PM Coach. My daughter lives in Killeen which is about an hour north and west of Austin. I have been through Austin and it seems to be really nice.

Coach, Billmac's son (Richard) lives in Austin. I'm sure that he could give you some good insight.

Ron, there are several members listed for Austin. Patrick Carpenter (Gringostarr01) is a super nice guy I met back in 2008 when I rode out for the Chuck Burt Memorial Ride. He lives in Austin and plays drums in a band so he would know a lot about Austin.

Son moving to Austin
My son lives in a nice area in North Austin. He is near Loop 620 and Anderson Mill. He use to live in a nice area called Steiner Ranch.
We go visit them every couple of weeks and have since the grandson was born 7 years ago. I am getting pretty comfortable with knowing my way around the city. North and west Austin seems pretty nice to me. I try to avoid south and east Austin as much as possible. Traffic in Austin is pretty rough. There are many toll roads which help around the traffic. Unfortunately the airport is south and east of downtown. I can say the suburbs to the north are pretty nice. Austin is melting pot of of people from around the Country and the World. Lots of international commerce and Austin is the HQ of large technology Corporations, such as Dell. Also the home of the University of Texas. If you like living in the big city, Austin is the Capitol of Texas and a pretty nice place. Lots to see and do. Nearly a million people. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Son moving to Austin
One of my best friends lives in Kyle which is south of Austin about 30 minutes or so. I've only spent about a week in the area, but it seemed like a nice place. It would probably be my choice of spots in Texas to live. There are lots of things to do and the city is very environmentally friendly. Like billmac said, it is a melting pot of people. Austin's unofficial slogan is "keep Austin weird", but everyone seemed very nice and welcoming. Very beautiful country and from what I hear, some great motorcycle roads in the hill country surrounding the area.

Once he moves to Austin, you need to come and visit...often. The Texas Hill Country is not but 60 miles away. That's all a man and motorcycle need.

I figure we can ride over to see him, then up to OK to see son #2, then to ND to see son #3. Only problem is what to do with son #4 that is only 11. Maybe a bike for mom or a sidecar.

It is a melting pot and sometimes pretty weird and Austinites are pretty proud of that but there are lots of good folks up there and quite a few Tx VROC members. You raise them good they'll do fine wherever they go. Doesn't keep dad from worrying though. Plane ticket for the wife. Take the boy for the ride of his life. Number 1 son ride? Family? Job? School?

I can tell you that Austin is much warmer than North Dakota in January!
