'99 Speedo Cable

Afrer my speedo went nuts (stuck at 45-55 mph and bounced up and down) I replaced it with a new one. Simple, $14 at dealer, and it worked great immediately!

Then, on my ride through the Lagunas, it started it's bouncing again.

I spoke with our illustrious CME, who recommended I use some grease in both ends.

Knowing BD's background, it took me a minute to realize he meant both ends of the cable.

Rode to the local bike shop where I know the owner and he gave me some grease.

I opened the speedo housing to find the cable was just sitting there loose.. not threaded on at all!

Greased it and reconnected it. Voila!!!

Thank you CME..... but here is my question:

How the hell does a cable that is threaded on probably 15 turns vibrate loose??

Nico, the Humble Higher Up.

You most likely didn't tighten it all the way the first time. I usually snug it up with pliers to make sure .

Since you didn't know about what ends to grease (fancy that?) I will defer my answer to Ringadingh's. You didn't put it on right. What a freekin knucklehead!!

Since you didn't have any grease and needed to borrow some from your dealer,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,neve r mind.......I don't want to know the answer LOL!!

Ditto on snugging up with pliers. The one time I didn't and was on a long ride, when I stopped the stinking cable not only came disconnected but wiggled it's way from the gas tank and was dragging on the ground. ::) Now I always snug it up with pliers.

.....Nico,

.........grease, now you cannot use that water based stuff you have laying around the house.......that's for something else entirely.....use a petroleum based product made specifically for automotive use.
