Royal Purple vs. Amsoil

I just changed out my oil from Amsoil 10w40 to Royal Purple 20w50 for the summer. I can't believe the difference in engine noise. With the Amsoil I was getting all sorts of engine clattering, but since changing to the Royal Purple the engine is much quieter and smoother sounding. I have no idea if this means anything as far a protection or performance, but it sure sounds better with the Royal Purple.

where did you get Royal Purple??? I may give it a shot.....I was going to try Mobile 1 MX.That I ues in My Honda.......Rich

Mostly it's just the change in viscosity that made the difference. Thicker oil makes an engine quieter. Oil gets thin as you use it, too, so when you changed the used oil to new oil the difference was enhanced by that factor as well.

Some of the tests I've seen Rate Royal purple way under Mobil 1 and Amsoil. But my uneducated guess would be that it's still better than your average dino oil.

That's why I switched from Royal Purple to Amsoil. The comparrison test showed Amsoil was best of all the oils tested. However, the bike seems to run and shift smoother with the Royal Purple. I have been using Royal Purple 10w40 in the winter and RP 20w50 in the summer. I only left the Amsoil in for about 3500 miles because I didn't like the way the bike sounded and shifted with it. My engine is happy again (completely subjective opinion :) ).

That's because 10w-40 is just too thin for these engines. I always use 15w-50 unless the weather gets down in the 30's.

I'm riding in the summertime heat of South Florida and planned on an oil change before heading up to The Eastern Rally.
Should I move to a heavier weight? Probably running in upper 80's to low 90's temp most of the way up and back.

If it was my bike I would use 20w50, which I do put in for July and August here in the heat. In Sept- Oct I switch back to 10w40

Royal Purple must be doing something right! ;)
Its used by most Sprint Car Owners. And The Pa. Posse.
Good Stuff! Try reading about what independent studies show.
Most of the crap you read about on forums about Amsoil is writen by guys that sell it. ;)

I prefer at least 15w-50 or 20w-50 in the summer heat. I go down to about 10w-40 in the winter, once temps get to the low 40's and 30's.

There are 3 reasons in my mind to run thin oil like 10w-anything.

1. easier starting in cold weather (most people don't ride when it's that cold)

2. engines with tight clearances (Nomads don't got 'em)

3. the need for best possible gas mileage (not a concern on bikes)

The difference in sound and smoothness may have been due to the viscosity difference between the oils, but since I didn't switch from 10w40 Amsoil to 20w50 Amsoil I don't know. I don't remember such a big difference when I switched from RP 10w40 to RP 20w50 last Spring, but it might not have been so hot last year.
P.S. - The purple color makes it a lot easier to see in the site glass.

They used to make this purple motor oil Called Royal Triton.

One day I went with my dad to get the oil changed on his Scout. It had been siting undriven in the desert for 14 months while he was in Vietnam. The mechanic pulled the plug, and this dark, dark fluid gushes out, and he asked my dad, "Do you use Royal Triton?"

I run Auto Mobile 1 15-50. I can get it at any Wally World at a decent price compaired to Amsoil or Royal Purple and considering I would have to go 50 miles to get either of them.
