After setting it up level to check it, found the oil to be clean over the top of the sight glass. I drained a bit out via the filter screen until it looked right. The first time I thought maybe I mis-measured when filling it or something and made a mental note to be more careful with the measurement. Next change it did it again and I was being real careful this time. Let a bit out again. Now I've started using 3.5 quarts and it's still a little high but much closer.

In case anybody wonders............no I wasn't using the metric scale on my measuring cup/pitcher.
Well now, the manual I read called for 3.7 quarts with filter, so rather than measure I just put a full gallon (4 quarts) Rotella T-6 and no problems. i dont think that will hurt anything? Knock on wood.
I see that some are running only 3 quarts? I think that is to little oil.
anyway, i now change the oil every 5K miles no matter what.

You put in
3.7 qts when engine is completely dry (3.5 L),
3.3 qts when filter is removed (3.1 L)
3.1 qts when filter is not removed (2.9 L)

I have never, and will never premeasure the amount of oil I put into the bike. I put 3 quarts in, start the bike for 20 seconds to fill the filter and then top it off to the correct spot on the site glass. Easy and simple and accurate every single time.

Not on a "dry motor" its the correct amount, but most of us will never have a dry motor.

Here's how I changed my oil and never worried about how many liters of oil I put in:
  1. Warm up the engine (rode around our underground parking a few laps)
  2. Open the filler hole
  3. Drain the oil from the kickstand side
  4. Remove the filter
  5. Open the new filter package and remove the seal when ready for the next step
  6. Fill the oil filter with fresh oil, very slowly and let the new filter element absorb the oil (this is done slowly, otherwise some oil is wasted)
  7. At this point, one of my neighbours comes around and we talk about how beautiful this Nomad is. This social interaction is very important; it maintains a motorbike friendly community and allows for the engine oil completely drain
  8. Inspect the oil screen and install the drain plug
  9. Clean the oil filter mating surface on the engine
  10. Oil the o-ring on the filter and hand tighten it on the engine
  11. Fill about 2.8 liters of fresh oil
  12. Straighten the bike and check level
  13. Add more oil with small increments to bring the level to 60% on the sight glass
  14. Hand tighten the filler cap
  15. Clean the mess on and around the bike
  16. Start up the engine and check for leaks
  17. I'm good for another 8,000 km

Jared, I am with you on the 3 qts, run then top off aproach. I use a wheel chock that gets me to dead level when I do it and I use the drain plug not the spring cover to drain the oil. I almost always use a "skosh" more (maybe a 1/4 of a qt) than 3 qts to get to the high egde of the accepted operating level in the sight glass using this aproach. I think the guys using the spring cover with the bike over on it's side stand are creating the "dry engine" condition and can get away with a little more oil than my aproach.
But a grossly over filled engine will stress piston oil rings and create added parasitic drag on the crank and clutch componets. Running with to much oil is better than to little but it is not good. Use the right amount and check frquently.

Tell me more about #6, because I've often wondered about pre-wetting the new oil filter element, do you pour oil into the filter and let the oil soak the element a bit and then drain the oil out before installing filter on the bike?

For #8 going 8,000 km, are you using synthetic?

I still think the 1500 motor should only take 3.3 qts with a new filter

#6 - I pour oil into new filter as much as it can take and then I quickly install it without losing too much oil. By doing so I kind of prime the lube oil system prior to the first start. (The 2008 Nomad oil filter is situated very low, some air will get trapped inside while filling oil and I think this trapped air should be purged).

#8 - Yes. If memory serves me well, I used synthetic blended oil since about 15K km and switched to Rotella T6 (synthetic) at about 20K km. My current bike is an FLHTC and I switched to Mobil 1 20W50 synthetic at 1,600 km.

Basically, I'm with Jared and using RotellaT6 5/40. I always use the screen plug just to look at screen. Better safe than sorry. When filling bike after complete drain, takes just shy of the gallon. No clutch slips or other problems so far. Curious though, no matter what oil I'm using, still have to add oil between changes. No leaks, no smoke, no noticeable oil in cover and throttle-bodies still clean. Any opinion or normal for everyone?

Don't know where I was getting my numbers from. Directly from the manaul it says.

From an online metric to US standard conversion program.

No wonder. I've been putting in way too much oil at 3.7 quarts. Oh well, now I know.

roadhawg and others, you might want to re-think your 4 quarts.
