Oil leak

My friend's 1600 classic has a small oil leak. The oil is dripping on the left side, near the kick stand. It's not a lot, but it's there. Anyone have any ideas!

Thanks!

Oil leak

Clutch cylinder under the side cover (brake fluid)? You sure it's oil?

Oil leak

Its either brake fluid from the clutch slave cylinder or engine oil from the clutch push rod seal. Not a tough fix either way! :)

Oil leak

Lomax,
Not to hijack Utah's post, but can you expand on the push rod seal?
I think this is where mine was leaking recently; I opened her up, pushed the rod in, pushed the seal back in place and tightened her up. Changed out oil (from selling dealer) afterwards....did I miss something, need to redo anything or is that the fix? Secondly, what would cause the rod to pop out?

Oil leak

Or it's gear oil dripping from the bottom of the rubber boot. There is no mistaking the smell of either of the three. My rear seal gave out at the National Rally in Custer last year and began dripping from the bottom of the boot. The oil works its way up the shaft and drips there. That is the only place it can leak externally when the internal shaft seal begins leaking.

Oil leak

Clutch pushrod seal has worked its way out of the crankcase. Easy fix.

Oil leak

Youll have to determine what fluid it is for sure and then youll know which repair is in order.

Oil leak

I haven't seen it myself, so I'm not too sure if it's oil or brake fluid.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll double check and get back to you guys.

Is there a step by step on gadgets site or somewhere to explain how to fix the clutch pushrod seal? I'm guessing that is the problem.

Oil leak

azpnshi
If the clutch push rod seal pops out, you can either push the old one back in or replace it with a new one. Regardless which way you go, you should put a small amount of gasket glue or equivalent on the outer edge before pushing it back in. This should stop it from popping back out. Also, push it in only far enough to be flush with the outside of the casing. If you push it in to far, it can fall inside the engine and will ruin your day! :)

Oil leak

If it is the push rod seal, Id clean any oil residue real good with rubbing alcohol or spray parts cleaner, and use loctite on the seal when replacing it. If its gear oil, you will have to remove the final drive and replace the seal that is around the pinion shaft. Its a little more work but you can do it at home if your handy with tools.

Oil leak

Hi

Talk about timing...

I just noticed a leak yesterday, right by the kickstand. It is not motor oil,& I don’t think it is from the shaft, .I will have the bike on a trailer in the morning & the 2005 Nad will be at dealer tomorrow, April 21 I can’t complain, the only time they saw the bike was for the 1,000 click service & to install a rear tire.
The bike does have 54,689 clicks!
I will post after I get the news & fix.

Cheers

If its not motor or gear oil it will be brake fluid from the clutch slave cylinder
