GPS Maps

Hi everyone, I just started using GPS last year when I was given an old one by a friend. I've had no luck updating the map using free sites so I'm looking at newer ones on ebay. Question is if I buy a LMT model 2nd. hand, do I still get the free map updates ? Thanks.

Unless you buy a GPS with lifetime updates, maps are not free. LMT means lifetime maps and traffic, but I don't know if that applies only to the original purchaser.

Garmin's definition of lifetime maps is not exactly lifetime... Their criteria means that if you don't plug your GPS into your computer enough so that you miss two or three consecutive updates out of the five or so released yearly, then you clearly don't use it much any more as far as they're concerned, and the lifetime of your unit has expired.

That's fine by me... I'm a serial updater.

Here's a useful (but old) forum page on that subject though, which says you should be cautious buying a used Garmin with LMT. It may need to be updated outside of using Garmin Express.

And here's an EBay buying guide on the same subject.

"if I buy a LMT model 2nd. hand, do I still get the free map updates"
From Garmin's site
"Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription or other lifetime map subscription may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product."

so the answer appears to be no.

As an aside I use the Dezel 770 by Garmin in a Ram box to help make it more usable in poor weather, still carry a large baggy to cover in rain. Like this one due to 7" screen, able to link it to cell phone for weather radar and can link it to my Sena headset. It also has voice commands so I don't have to fumble with touching the screen. Bought refurb unit and am very happy with it. Also has ability to enter my truck/camper spec to know if it is passable to drive

I think that was their old policy as referred to in that first link of mine Hillhouse... On the Garmin site now, the answer appears to be - yes you can transfer your device to a new owner.

https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch...VD72slwYrvlSo8

"Transferring device registration from a previous owner
If you purchase a device second hand from an individual and the unit is already registered to that person, you may see a message appear that states "The serial number you have entered has already been registered" when trying to register it to a separate myGarmin account. You will need to contact that person directly to have the device removed from their account so you can then register it to your own account. The original owner can simply delete the registered device from their account thus opening it up to be registered on a new account.

Review related content for instructions on how to delete a registered device from a myGarmin account.

Note: If you have had the device for some time, it is possible that you may have already registered the device using a different myGarmin account. You can request an e-mail to be sent if you have forgotten your username or password."

interesting because here is where I got the info, last line.
https://www.garmin.com/en-US/legal/lmdisclaimer

Your link appears to be about device registration. But I would think that if you change the registration to your account you could then get the map updates. thought the LMT was with the device not owner.

Easy fix - buy a new/refurb unit and it won't be an issue

I bought a used Zumo 550 with LMT a couple years ago and I still get free map updates so I would say yes the lifetime map updates stay with the unit.

I have three LM/LMT Garmins. One bought new, two picked up used. I downloaded the GARMIN EXPRESS tool from their site and have been updating all three regularly without issue.

Ride safe,

This link looks like it refers to the lifetime map subscription you can buy from Garmin for a GPS that doesn't already come with free updates.

Thanks Smokier, that's what I was looking for. Been watching ebay & seeing used LMT units going for around $50.00.
