What is missing here?

This is the left side cover on a 2005 Vulcan Nomad 1600 that is a California model.

I removed the alarm system that the PO had here and I don't know what is supposed to be attached to these two hoses.

The bike runs fine but I think something was taken out to make room for all the alarm parts.

Trace them back to see where they go. They may not be connected any more.

Is that a CA emissions bike? Looks like the previous owner removed the charcoal canister that would be positioned above the tool kit on a CA bike.

^^^
What he said. If its a California model those hoses are probably gas tank vents that were connected to a gas fumes canister.

Yes it is a California bike.

So is that why I sometimes smell gas fumes?

Should I buy a charcoal canister to hook up to these, plug them or just leave them alone?

The PO installed Cobra True Duals Exhaust System but no fuel processor that I can see. That will be a project that I will be doing in the future.

You should have a vent on your gas tank. It keeps a vacuum from building up in the tank and creating a fuel flow problem. The non.Ca models just route a hose to below the tank and leave it open air. You could re route one of yours but its not hurting anything if you just leave it the way it is...or you could buy a replacement canister if your hard core environmentalist.

Let me look this weekend, I might have the one I took off my Nomad. I needed the space to mount my cruise control module. If I still have it, you're welcome to it.

yup the carbon canister is gone. These hoses could be gone too. But a larger over all photo or a set of bike photos might be better than just this one. My best guess is that the left side as seated air filter is also missing and so is the black plastic air box that crosses over to the right side as seated. I removed all that crap a few years ago from another guys cali model bike, but did it clean as if it were always like the rest of the bikes not made for cal. IF all the rest is missing there is no sense replacing just the canister.
