Long time Vulcaner, First time Bagger.
Hello, and thanks for having me. I've enjoyed reading this forum and just joined here and VBA. I've been a VROC member since 2003.
In March I traded my 2001 Vulcan 1500 Classic for a 2011 Nomad. I then had the Nomad shipped from New Hampshire to where I am on a temporary work assignment (thru July) in San Diego, CA. For the past month I've been enjoying the early spring/summer here in SoCal, cruising the coast and taking a few nice rides in the mountains around Julian. I've been enjoying the added creature comforts of the '11 nomad - love the cruise control, trip computer, and wow - what a difference a windshield can make; I don't feel like a human parachute on the highway anymore. The extra 200 pounds of weight over the 1500 initially took some getting used to, and the clunking tranny was a surprise but seems to be normal from what I read online. In July I have a two week vacation and my plan is to ride my Nomad back to New Hampshire. This will be my first ride over 1000 miles. I've been devouring online info on long distance riding (iron butt, etc) and appreciate anyone pointing me to other threads on here (or elsewhere) that already deal with the topic. The route I have planned so far is: San Diego, Las Vegas, Zion NP Utah, Page AZ, Monument Valley, Moab UT, Carbondale Colorado (visit friend), Aspen, down to northern New Mexico and across to Amarillo TX, OK City, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, over to Cherokee NC to pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway, north through the heart of Appalachia to Gettysburg PA, Whitingham VT (visit friend), then home to NH. I might by-pass Utah & Colorado in favor of Route 66 from LA to OK (thoughts?). About 4000 miles total. 14-15 days seems doable. Looking forward to participating in the community. Mike

I've done a couple and did a fair write up on one. Look me up by name at the IronButt site.
Ted Eyster. PS: stay hydrated and alert. - - - I started to say don't risk your life for a ride, but that's kind of redundant since every time we throw a leg over the saddle we risk that.

Route 66, what's left of it anyway, is pretty much a waste of time. There is a pretty good stretch left through AZ, but Utah and Colorado is more scenic and a better ride.

Welcome from Northern California
Used to live in So Cal and had many trips down in San Diego area and back roads. Sounds like a great trip you have planned At ~280 miles a day that will give you time to do some sight seeing and not feel rushed to make it to the next motel. Have a safe trip

Welcome from the sunset side of the High Sierra's...
Warning about a ride thru the deserts in July...it's common to see temps of 125 degrees between Victorville and Las Vegas ...and that's "in the shade" ..while there is NO SHADE out on the roads (I had a heat stroke at about 137 degrees (direct sun temps).out on I-40 near Needles Ca.) If I was going to take that ride I'd try to take the roads that are in the higher elevations...and Rt 66 was a great hiway..it's mostly memories now. (I'll be -out there, some where, in the wind..myself about May, June, July, Aug, Sept...) |

Welcome from Nebraska.
You are going to see some hot, may be vey hot, weather on your ride/route. If it were me, I would be on the road at just before sun rise and get a good lick in in the AM. Good luck
